Barrio Yungay is a neighborhood of Santiago, Chile, located to the west of the city center in the commune of Santiago and to the west of Barrio Brasil. HistoryThis neighborhood was a rural area until 1835.[1] The land was owned by José Santiago Portales Larraín, who was the father of Diego Portales. After the death of the head of the family, the {{convert|350|ha|acre|abbr=on}} that made up the estate were divided into lots.[1] The westernmost portion was purchased by the Chilean State for the purpose of creating the Quinta Normal de Agricultura.[1] The Plaza Yungay and the San Saturnino parish church, which are the heart of the neighborhood, were created on the land inherited by Diego Portales.[1] Barrio Yungay was officially born in 1839 as a way of commemorating the Chilean victory in the Battle of Yungay.[2] References1. ^1 2 3 {{Cite web |url= http://www.memoriachilena.cl/602/w3-article-3372.html |title= El Barrio Yungay (1840-2007) |publisher=Memoria Chilena |language=Spanish |accessdate=25 December 2013}} 2. ^{{Cite web |url=http://www.monumentos.cl/OpenSupport_Monumento/asp/PopUpFicha/ficha_publica.asp?monumento=2072 |title=Sector que indica de los Barrios Yungay y Brasil de Santiago Poniente |publisher=National Monuments Council |language=Spanish |accessdate=25 December 2013 }}{{dead link|date=October 2016 |bot=InternetArchiveBot |fix-attempted=yes }} External links
