The brownstone was first used for construction of the second Milwaukee County Courthouse, now demolished. The quarry, now filled with water, is about {{convert|200|ft|m}} long and about {{convert|25|ft|m}} deep. Blocks of sandstone remain, together with the rusting remains of quarrying machinery. All company buildings and workers' cabins have disappeared.[2] Other buildings built with the quarry's product include the old Chicago Tribune building, the Landmark Chapel at the Forest Home Cemetery and St. Paul's Episcopal Church, both in Milwaukee.[2] The island and quarry are presently included in Apostle Islands National Lakeshore and are administered by the National Park Service.[3] The quarry was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on March 29, 1978.[1] References1. ^1 {{NRISref|version=2010a}} {{Apostle Islands}}{{NRHP in Apostle Islands NL}}{{National Register of Historic Places}}2. ^1 {{cite web|last=Barnes|first=Herschel L.D.|title=National Register of Historic Places Inventory - Nomination Form: Bass Island Brownstone Quarry|url={{NRHP url|id=78000075}}|publisher=National Park Service|accessdate=26 October 2011|date=July 23, 1975}} 3. ^{{cite web|title=Apostle Islands National Lakeshore Map|url=http://www.nps.gov/pwr/customcf/apps/maps/showmap.cfm?alphacode=apis&parkname=Apostle%20Islands%20National%20Lakeshore|publisher=National Park Service|accessdate=26 October 2011}} 7 : Buildings and structures in Ashland County, Wisconsin|Quarries in the United States|Apostle Islands National Lakeshore|Industrial buildings and structures on the National Register of Historic Places in Wisconsin|National Register of Historic Places in Ashland County, Wisconsin|1868 establishments in Wisconsin|1893 disestablishments in Wisconsin |
