"A Race Through Dark Places" is an episode from the second season of the science fiction television series Babylon 5. In the episode, the Psi Cop Bester comes to Babylon 5 chasing after a group of rogue telepaths. The station's personnel have to deal with Bester's arrival and the legal and moral issues surrounding the presence of the rogue telepaths on the station.

Graham Templeton of Geek.com included "A Race Through Dark Places" as "essential watching" for season two, saying he found the episode important because "the wonderful Mr. Bester gets a chance to shine here, introducing many elements that will continue for years to come."[1]

Synopsis

Alfred Bester of Psi Corps learns of a figurative underground railroad, smuggling known and unregistered telepaths from Earth through Babylon 5 to the outer rim where they will be impossible to find. Bester travels to the station and informs the command staff, as well as Talia Winters, of the situation and requests their help, but openly considered if one of the station's staff is providing inside support, leading to some discontent between them.

Bester discusses the matter with Talia, noting he can hear strong telepathic cries of murder directed towards him. The two are attacked in the open. Bester kills two of the attackers, but others capture Talia and take her to Downbelow and the rest of the underground telepaths. Their leader encourages her to sit and listen to their stories of the treatment they got from Psi Corps, ranging from concentration camps to forced breeding to create more powerful telepaths. He also reminds her about Jason Ironheart, who he believes left her with a powerful gift before his ascension to a new form. Talia, already wary of Psi Corps, is convinced to help the group escape and has them contact Sheridan to help. Sheridan comes to meet the railroad's leader in Downbelow and is surprised to find Dr. Franklin there. Franklin admits he is the inside man on the station to help the railroad, as it is part of his oath as a doctor to help those in need. Sheridan becomes conflicted as while he agrees with the cause, any help he may give would potentially leave him liable for the illegal sheltering of telepaths. The telepaths sense Bester is coming, and Talia suggests a plan.

Bester arrives in Downbelow where Talia and the other telepaths face him. Talia reveals that in speaking to the group, she has learned why the Corps indoctorines to wear gloves; the group holds hands, and their combined telepathic power begins to overpower Bester. The leader finds that Bester is overpowering them and that someone must be purposely stunting their power, and suddenly Talia releases her grip and fires at the group, followed shortly by Bester. The telepaths are all killed, and while Bester wanted to take a few alive, believe the situation resolved, and leaves. However, this is revealed to be a telepathic illusion created by Talia and the other telepaths to trick Bester into seeing that. Talia cautions Sheridan to avoid Bester until he leaves, as if should sense doubt, he will figure out it was an illusion. Sheridan declares that since no illegal activity took place here, the telepaths can go. Talia goes to see Bester off, who stops to glance back at Talia in question before leaving. Talia then goes to speak to Ivanova, wanting to get much about Psi Corps off her chest.

Separate plots lines involve Delenn wanting to embrace her human-Minbari hybrid form more and inviting Sheridan to dinner to just talk, and Sheridan and Ivanova dealing with Earth Alliance's demands to pay more rent for their larger quarters or be forced to move to smaller ones.
