Originally opened as a shopping mall in the 1960s, the mall later failed and the convention center opened in its place. In 2010, it was purchased by the University of Massachusetts Boston after the building went into foreclosure.[1] UMass Boston's eventual plan was to demolish the center, and redevelop it into space for the campus.[2] It had been proposed as the site for the Olympic Village as part of the Boston bid for the 2024 Summer Olympics. The property is located near the JFK/UMass station on the MBTA Red Line, which would have been renovated under the Olympics plan.[3] On 4 March 2015, part of the roof of the building collapsed under the weight of snow[4][5] during Boston's record-setting winter of 2015.[6] In April 2016, a phased demolition of the building that made up the site began in order to expand the parking area, build new pedestrian walkways connecting Mount Vernon Street with the Dorchester Shores Reservation and the Boston HarborWalk, and improve the lighting, landscaping, bike racks, and security devices.[7][8] In January 2018, the UMass System put the property up for sale.[9] References1. ^{{cite web|last=Forry|first=Edward|title=BREAKING NEWS- UMass and Bayside Expo agree on sale|url=http://www.dotnews.com/2010/breaking-news-umass-and-bayside-expo-agree-sale|publisher=Dorchester Reporter|accessdate=21 March 2013|date=17 February 2010}} {{University of Massachusetts Boston}}2. ^{{cite web|title=25-Year Campus Master Plan|url=http://www.umb.edu/the_university/masterplan|publisher=University of Massachusetts Boston|accessdate=22 November 2014}} 3. ^{{cite news|last1=Dezenski|first1=Lauren|title=Vital Olympic transit projects not in state bond bill|url=http://www.dotnews.com/2015/vital-olympic-transit-projects-not-state-bond-bill|accessdate=16 January 2015|publisher=Dorchester Reporter|date=14 January 2015}} 4. ^{{cite web |title=Partial Roof Collapse At Former Bayside Expo Center |url=http://www.whdh.com/story/28258077/partial-roof-collapse-at-former-bayside-expo-center |publisher=WHDH-TV |accessdate=5 March 2015 |deadurl=yes |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20150306142140/http://www.whdh.com/story/28258077/partial-roof-collapse-at-former-bayside-expo-center |archivedate=6 March 2015 |df= }} 5. ^{{cite news|first1=Justin|last1=Michaels|first2=Tim|last2=Jones|title=Partial Roof Collapse at Old Bayside Expo Center|url=http://www.necn.com/news/new-england/Roof-Collapse-at-Old-Bayside-Expo-Center--294982841.html|date=March 4, 2015|accessdate=August 3, 2017|publisher=NECN}} 6. ^{{cite web|title=Boston Inches Closer To Snowfall Total Record|url=http://boston.cbslocal.com/2015/03/02/boston-inches-closer-to-snowfall-total-record/|publisher=CBS Boston|accessdate=2 March 2015}} 7. ^{{Citation|title=UMass Boston Bayside Property - University of Massachusetts Boston|publisher=University of Massachusetts Boston|url=https://www.umb.edu/the_university/masterplan/bayside|accessdate=March 22, 2017}} 8. ^{{cite news|title=Former Bayside Expo Coming Down|work=UMass Boston News|url=https://www.umb.edu/news/detail/former_bayside_expo_coming_down|date=April 29, 2016|accessdate=March 22, 2017}} 9. ^{{Cite news|url=http://www.wbur.org/edify/2018/01/25/umass-bayside-sale|title=UMass Boston Lists Bayside Site For Potential Sale|last=Rios|first=Simón|date=January 25, 2018|work=WBUR|access-date=January 25, 2018}} 8 : Dorchester, Boston|Convention centers in Massachusetts|Buildings and structures in Boston|Economy of Boston|University of Massachusetts Boston|Defunct shopping malls in the United States|1960s establishments in Massachusetts|Buildings and structures completed in the 1960s |
