Burroughs High School, but did not continue to college, instead marrying and starting a family. Spindler resumed her formal art education in 1979, with classes at Cerro Coso Community College.[4] She focused on ceramic sculpture, graduating with an Associate of Arts degree in 1986.[5] She then attended the University of California, Santa Cruz, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1990, at the age of 47.[2][3] While Spindler's ceramics work started as a hobby, she slowly parlayed this into a professional career. Her most prominent work, the 2000 sculpture Hot Dog, is on permanent display in the Smithsonian American Art Museum.[6][1] Other works of hers are included in the permanent collections of the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento, California, and the Winfield Gallery in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California.[7] Spindler has frequently spoken to students on her experiences in overcoming learning disabilities. In 2012, she served as a Distinguished Speaker for her alma mater Cerro Coso Community College's commencement exercises.[5] She has also served as a trustee for Kern Community College District and the California Association of Community Colleges, and served on the Governor of California's Commission for Disabled Students.[3] References1. ^1 {{cite web | url=http://bodega.towns.pressdemocrat.com/2012/07/news/hot-dogs-ice-cream-cones-and-art/ | title=Hot dogs, ice cream cones and art | work=Press Democrat | date=July 4, 2012 | accessdate=19 July 2013 | author=Granahan, Andrea}} 2. ^1 {{cite web |url=http://americanart.si.edu/collections/search/artist/?id=27401 |title=Betty Spindler |author= |date= |website=Smithsonian American Art Museum |publisher=Smithsonian Institution |accessdate=19 July 2013}} 3. ^1 2 {{cite web |url=http://www.cc.cc.ca.us/alumni/stories/bspindler.asp |title=Betty Spindler |author= |date= |website=Cerro Coso Community College Alumni |publisher=Cerro Coso Community College |accessdate=19 July 2013}} 4. ^{{cite news |url= http://www.bakersfieldcalifornian.com/columnists/camille-gavin/x251084895/Theater-takes-stab-at-wacky-Robin-Hood |title=Theater takes stab at wacky 'Robin Hood' |work=Bakersfield Californian|author=Camille Gavin|date = February 10, 2006|accessdate=July 29, 2013}} 5. ^1 {{cite web | url=http://www.newsreviewiwv.com/zarchives/2012-05-16/2012-05-16-story-13.html | title=College honors grads at commencement exercises | work=The News Review | date=July 4, 2012 | accessdate=19 July 2013}} 6. ^{{cite web |url=http://americanart.si.edu/collections/search/artwork/?id=54560 |title=Hot Dog by Betty Spindler |author= |date= |website=Smithsonian American Art Museum |publisher=Smithsonian Institution |accessdate=19 July 2013}} 7. ^{{cite news|url=http://www.ridgecrestca.com/article/20090925/NEWS/309259962/0/SEARCH|title=Open Studio Tour - Betty Spindler|work=Ridgecrest News|author=Ruth Justis|date= July 1, 2012|accessdate=19 July 2013}} External links
