After a year with North Melbourne in the Victorian Football Association (VFA), he joined Fitzroy where he played for three seasons. In 1915, Marchbank transferred to Hawthorn[3] in the VFA along with his half-brother Jim but made only one appearance[4] before enlisting to serve in World War I.[5] He married Emma Theresa McMaster in 1919 and served as a policeman for thirty years in various country and metropolitan locations until his death in 1941.
