It was built in the 1840s, as a 1 1/2-story, Greek Revival frame I-house dwelling. It was enlarged to two stories in the 1850s. It was again enlarged in 1873, by an extension across the rear of the original dwelling. A porch across the front was added much later. It was the home of Joseph Edward Birch and his descendants. The house is now owned by former City of Falls Church Vice Mayor and Mrs. Samuel A. Mabry. The Mabry's purchased the house in 1984. The garden has been featured in the Virginia State Garden show twice.[3] It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977.[2] References1. ^{{cite web|title=Virginia Landmarks Register|url=http://www.dhr.virginia.gov/registers/register_counties_cities.htm|publisher=Virginia Department of Historic Resources|accessdate=19 March 2013|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20130921053819/http://www.dhr.virginia.gov/registers/register_counties_cities.htm|archive-date=2013-09-21|dead-url=yes|df=}} {{National Register of Historic Places in Virginia}}{{FallsChurchVA-NRHP-stub}}2. ^1 {{NRISref|version=2010a}} 3. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.dhr.virginia.gov/registers/Cities/FallsChurch/110-0010_Birch_House_1977_Final_Nomination.pdf |title=National Register of Historic Places Inventory/Nomination: Birch House |author=Virginia Historic Landmarks Commission Staff|date=April 1977 |publisher=Virginia Department of Historic Resources}} and Accompanying photo 5 : Houses on the National Register of Historic Places in Virginia|Greek Revival houses in Virginia|Houses completed in 1845|Houses in Falls Church, Virginia|National Register of Historic Places in Falls Church, Virginia |
