The BMW F22/F23 is the first generation of the BMW 2 Series lineage of compact coupés and convertibles. It was released in 2013 as the successor to the E82/E88 coupe/convertible models of the first generation of the 1 Series lineage. The F22/F23 is produced alongside, and shares many features with- the F20 1 Series range. The body styles of the F22/F23 range are:

  • 2 door coupe (F22 model code)
  • 2 door convertible (F23 model code)

As per the F20 1 Series range, the F22/F23 is powered by turbocharged petrol and diesel engines with three cylinders (petrol only), four cylinders and six cylinders.

The M version of the 2 Series is the M2 coupé. The M2 is powered by a powerful version of the N55 turbocharged straight-six engine. Its successor, the M2 Competition, is powered by the S55 straight-six engine also powering the M3 (F80) and the M4.

Body Styles

Development and launch

The F22/F23 was unveiled in 2014 at the North American International Auto Show,[4][5] followed by 13th Beijing International Automotive Exhibition 2014.[6]

The body structure is based on the F20/F21 1 Series.[7] Production began in November 2013[8] and sales began in March 2014.[9]

Early models include the 220i, M235i, and 220d.[10] The 218d and 225d were added in March 2014.[11] 228i, M235i xDrive were added in the end of 2014.[12] On October 13, 2015, the BMW M2 was officially unveiled. As of 2018, the M2 is replaced by the more powerful M2 Competition.[13][14]

In October 2015, BMW unveiled the new flagship 2 Series, the M2. It is an indirect successor to the 1 Series M Coupé. The M2 Coupé began production at the end of 2015, and went on sale in the United Kingdom during April 2016.

With the 6-speed manual gearbox, the M2 accelerates from 0 to {{cvt|100|km/h|mph|0|abbr=on}} in 4.5 seconds, or 4.3 seconds if equipped with the 7-speed DCT automatic gearbox.[15] The top speed is electronically limited to {{cvt|250|km/h|mph|0|abbr=on}}, but the limiter can be raised to {{cvt|270|km/h|mph|0|abbr=on}} as an option.

The US version of the M2 was unveiled in 2016 at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.[16]

The M2 is powered by a turbocharged 3.0 litre BMW N55B30 straight-six engine generating a maximum power output of {{convert|272|kW|PS hp|0|abbr=on}} at 6,500 rpm and having a redline of 7,000 rpm. Torque is listed at {{convert|465|Nm|lb·ft|0|abbr=on}} between 1,400–5,560 rpm, while an overboost function can increase torque to {{convert|500|Nm|lb·ft|0|abbr=on}} between 1,450–4,750 rpm. The engine utilises a twin scroll turbocharger.

M2 Competition

{{double image|right|BMW M2 Competition IMG 0807.jpg|200|BMW M2 Competition IMG 0808.jpg|200|BMW M2 Competition}}

In April 2018, BMW revealed the M2 Competition Coupé as a replacement for the standard M2 Coupé. The biggest change on the M2 Competition was the replacement of the turbocharged N55B30T0 engine with the S55B30T0 single scroll twin-turbocharged engine with a carbon fibre strut brace as used in the M3 (F80) and the M4. Power and torque figures are increased to {{cvt|302|kW|PS hp|0|abbr=on}} between 5,250–7,000 rpm and {{cvt|550|Nm|lbft|0|abbr=on}} between 2,350–5,230 rpm respectively. The car is available with a 6-speed manual gearbox as standard, although the 7-speed M DCT gearbox is available as an option. {{cvt|100|km/h|mph|0|abbr=on}} acceleration time is improved and is now achieved at 4.4 seconds (4.2 seconds with the 7-speed M DCT gearbox).

Exterior changes include new 19-inch lightweight Y-spoke alloy wheels, bigger brake discs with grey M-sport brake callipers, M-sport wing mirrors from the F80 M3, new front bumper with gloss black kidney grille for improved cooling, new two-pass exhaust system with electronically controlled flaps for improved emissions, new adaptive headlamps and two new exterior colours namely Sunset Orange Metallic and Hockenheim Silver Metallic. Top speed stands at {{cvt|250|km/h|mph|0|abbr=on}} or {{cvt|280|km/h|mph|0|abbr=on}} with the optional M-Driver's Package. The interior also receives minor modifications that include a carbon fibre trim, a new sport steering wheel from the F80 M3 with "M1" and "M2" driving mode selector buttons, door sills with "M2 Competition" badging and M-Sport stitched leather seats with "M2" badging. Weight has also been increased as compared to the standard M2 Coupé and now stands at {{cvt|1575|kg|lb|0|abbr=on}} courtesy of the new engine and cooling system. Deliveries of the M2 Competition began in July 2018.[17]
