He was born in Geneva to a Bulgarian father, Kyril Manev Tanev ({{lang-bg|Кирил Манев Танев}}, and French mother, Marie Purnot, from Metz.[2] He also played high-level field hockey, ice hockey and football.[3] Maneff was a virtual unknown in the world of international tennis before entering the 1936 French Championships in Paris, where he reached the quarterfinals. He put up a serious challenge to defending champion Fred Perry, who finally defeated him in four sets, 9-7, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.[4][5] References1. ^1 Wimbledon Results Archive 2. ^{{cite web|title="Boris" Auguste MANEFF TANEFF - Family tree Benoit DE CREVOISIER - Geneanet|url=http://gw.geneanet.org/crevoisier?lang=en&p=boris+auguste&n=maneff+taneff|website=gw.geneanet.org|accessdate=7 July 2017}} 3. ^{{cite news|title=Un grand champion nous a quittés|url=http://www.letempsarchives.ch/page/JDG_1960_05_27/13|accessdate=7 July 2017|work=Journal de Genève|issue=27 May 1960}} 4. ^{{cite web|title=Boris Maneff's GS Performance Timeline & Stats|url=http://www.db4tennis.com/players/male/boris-maneff|publisher=db4tennis|language=en}} 5. ^{{cite news|url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=888&dat=19360529&id=JkVPAAAAIBAJ&sjid=BE4DAAAAIBAJ&pg=3377,5993969&hl=en |title= Perry advances in net tourney: British star meets stiff opposition from young Boris Maneff|agency=Associated Press |work=St. Petersburg Times|date=29 May 1936|page=31|quote=20-year-old Boris Maneff, Bulgar-Swiss...}} External links
