Early life and educationSmith was born in Huntington, West Virginia, and grew up in the nearby town of Kenova. He attended Ceredo-Kenova High School and was an active part of his school's athletic department. He played football until his sophomore year when he decided to begin studying martial arts. As a senior, earned his black belt. Smith has noted that his martial arts practice continues to impact his leadership to this day.[3] Smith spent one semester at the United States Military Academy at West Point before enrolling in Marshall University.[4] In 1986, Smith received a bachelor's degree in business administration with an emphasis in marketing.[4] Smith earned his master's degree in management from Aquinas College in Michigan.[4] CareerHe was a senior vice president of marketing and business development at ADP, LLC. Smith also held various sales, marketing and general management positions with Pepsi, Seven-Up and ADVO, Inc. Smith joined Intuit in February 2003 as the vice president and general manager of Intuit's Accountant Central and Developer Network in Plano, Texas. He led the company's Consumer Tax Group in San Diego from March 2004 through May 2005. Appointed to the senior vice president and general manager of Intuit's Small Business Division in May 2006, Smith was responsible for the company's small business division which included the portfolio of QuickBooks, Quicken and Payroll products.
