释义 |
Bretby Art Pottery was an art pottery studio founded by Henry Tooth and William Ault in 1882. Tooth and Ault designed and built their own pottery in Woodville, Derbyshire, where production began on 25 October 1883. Tooth had been invited by Christopher Dresser to establish the Linthorpe Pottery at Middlesbrough in 1879. Within a year they had won a gold award at the Crystal Palace Exhibition in 1884, the same year that the 'Sunburst' trade mark was registered. The partnership was dissolved on 1 January 1887 when William Ault set up his own pottery Ault & Co. in Midland Road, Swadlincote.[1] Bretby was still produced by Tooth and Co. The works at Swadlincote closed in 1996 and some years later the factory was demolished, leaving only the building that housed the showroom and offices remaining. In May 2016 ownership of this building passed to The Heritage Trust[2] who are now trying to raise funds to restore the building. Examples in Public CollectionsSharpe's Pottery Museum in Swadlincote hold a substantial collection of early examples. Derby Museum and Art Gallery also holds a large collection.[3]References1. ^Bretby Art Pottery, Michael David Ash 2001 2. ^{{Cite web|url=https://www.theheritagetrust.org.uk/projects|title=The Heritage Trust projects|website=The Heritage Trust {{!}} Official Site|language=en|access-date=2018-01-07}} 3. ^{{cite book |title=Art Pottery, Accepting the Inevitable |first=Melanie|last=Paling |year=1987 }}{{verify credibility|date=November 2011}} 4 : Ceramics manufacturers of England|Organisations based in Derbyshire|History of Derbyshire|Companies established in 1883 |
