Bucklebury Manor is a Grade II listed former manor house in the civil parish of Bucklebury in the English county of Berkshire. Since 2012, it has been the home of the parents of HRH the Duchess of Cambridge.

Location

Bucklebury Manor is located at Pease Hill in Bucklebury, a village in West Berkshire.[1][2] The house's surrounding estate covers 18 acres [2][3].

History

The 1600 acre agricultural Bucklebury Estate,[4] was confiscated from Reading Abbey at the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1540 and granted to John Winchcombe. The Winchcombe family erected the Elizabethan mansion, Bucklebury House, just to the north of the Bucklebury Manor site but this burnt down in 1833. Their descendants built Bucklebury Manor around the same time, calling it 'The Cottage' (sometimes Bucklebury Cottage).[1] The family then mostly lived on their estates in Gloucestershire, although the Cottage was briefly used as the manor house during the life of Mrs Webley-Parry and others in the early 20th century.

Bucklebury Manor was subsequently separated from the Bucklebury Estate and, in 2012, was purchased by Michael and Carole Middleton, the parents of Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge.[2][3]

Architecture

This Georgian house contains within its interior an early C17 ashlar fireplace that is carved with panelled pilasters that support a rich cornice.[1] There is also an over-mantel with shallow carved decoration, and a moulded flat arch with Delft type glazed tiles behind.[1] There are seven bedrooms.[2] Bucklebury Manor has its own tennis court and a swimming-pool.[3] It has been listed as Grade II by English Heritage since 22 November 1983.[1]
