Area InformationBulverton comprises low-density residential housing, areas of farmland and a wooded plantation and is connected by road to Sidmouth by the B3176. During the Sidmouth Folk Week the area is the location of the Bulverton Late Night Extra.[1] Since 1963 much of the Bulverton area has fallen under the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty[2]: {{quote| The East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) landscape is characterised by intimate wooded combes, vast areas of heathland, fertile river valleys and breathtaking cliffs or hilltops. It includes the East Devon section of the Jurassic Coast[3] - England's first natural World Heritage Site - and is a living, working landscape shaped by many centuries of farming activity. }} HistoryHistorically the area was a submanor of Balfour Manor, farmed from two locations Bulverton Farm (now Bulverton House) and Bulverton Well Farm (now Bulverton Well Cottages). The view from Bulverton Hill[4] is thought to have inspired 19th century poet and hymn writer John Keble who was a frequent visitor to Sidmouth. Keble’s Seat at Bulverton Hill is named after him and commands a panoramic view of the Lower Otter Valley and Dartmoor in the distance. RailwayThe former Sidmouth Railway station[5] is nearby, with the embankment still visible in certain areas. A proposed cycle route involving Sustrans[6] may use part of the embankment in the future to link outlying towns and villages to Sidmouth. ClimateThe Met Office have a climate station at Sidmouth in the generality of Bulverton that records the comparatively mild United Kingdom climate. {{Weather box|location = Sidmouth Station 1981–2010 |metric first = Y |single line = Y |Jan high C = 8.9 |Feb high C = 8.8 |Mar high C = 10.8 |Apr high C = 12.8 |May high C = 15.9 |Jun high C = 18.5 |Jul high C = 20.5 |Aug high C = 20.5 |Sep high C = 18.5 |Oct high C = 15.2 |Nov high C = 11.9 |Dec high C = 9.4 |year high C = 14.3 |Jan low C = 3.3 |Feb low C = 2.9 |Mar low C = 4.3 |Apr low C = 5.3 |May low C = 8.5 |Jun low C = 11.1 |Jul low C = 13.2 |Aug low C = 13.1 |Sep low C = 11.1 |Oct low C = 8.8 |Nov low C = 5.8 |Dec low C = 3.7 |year low C = 7.6 |Jan precipitation mm = 81.8 |Feb precipitation mm = 62.8 |Mar precipitation mm = 66.9 |Apr precipitation mm = 59.6 |May precipitation mm = 55.2 |Jun precipitation mm = 50.4 |Jul precipitation mm = 51.1 |Aug precipitation mm = 58.2 |Sep precipitation mm = 62.5 |Oct precipitation mm = 89.0 |Nov precipitation mm = 84.8 |Dec precipitation mm = 91.7 |year precipitation mm = 813.9 |Jan sun = 67.7 |Feb sun = 84.6 |Mar sun = 119.1 |Apr sun = 168.6 |May sun = 191.0 |Jun sun = 197.4 |Jul sun = 213.7 |Aug sun = 198.1 |Sep sun = 145.2 |Oct sun = 110.2 |Nov sun = 81.9 |Dec sun = 60.1 |year sun = 1637.7 |source 1 = Met Office[7] }} In fictionThe Extremes is a BSFA Award winning 1998 science fiction novel by Christopher Priest, partly set in a fictional seaside resort town called Bulverton.
