"Bum Bum" is a song by Dominican-American singer Kat DeLuna featuring American singer Trey Songz. The song was included on the compilation album Loading (2016). It samples and interpolates of Sister Nancy's 1982 song "Bam Bam" and Shaggy and Rikrok's 2000 single "It Wasn't Me". A dance song with reggae influences, "Bum Bum" includes lyrics about sex.

Critics had a mixed response to the song. It peaked at number 32 on the Rhythmic Billboard chart. A music video was released on June 16, 2015 and featured DeLuna shaking her butt and appearing nude. Remixes by Noise Cans and Frank Delour were made to promote the song.

Background and recording

"Bum Bum" was written by Thomas Allen, Harold Brown, Orville Burrell, Morris "B.B." Dickerson, Rickardo Ducent, Leroy Jordan, Charles Miller, Lee Oskar, Shaun Pizzonia, Winston Delano Riley, Howard Scott, and Brian Thompson.[1] It features Trey Songz.[2][3]

Composition and lyrics

A Vibe writer identified "Bum Bum" as a dance song with reggae influences and "island vibes",[1] while Idolator's Mike Wass called it a slow jam.[2] Noting the song's "soft and mellow" sound, Wass contrasted it with DeLuna's past music, where was frequently uptempo club music.[2]

"Bum Bum" samples and interpolates of Sister Nancy's 1982 song "Bam Bam" and Shaggy and Rikrok's 2000 single "It Wasn't Me".[3] DeLuna said that Hook choose the samples.[2] As part of a press release, she described the sample as "evidence that music transcends generations" and said "Bam Bam" had "left [a] musical imprint culturally".[2] The Fader's Rawiya Kameir cited "Bum Bum" as a possible indicator of dancehall's resurgence in mainstream media.[3]

Throughout the song, DeLuna provides sexual instructions to her partner, such as: "We can do it in the shower / We can do it on the floor / You can get it every hour, there’s so much more."[4] She teases her partner with the lyrics "Go hard but don’t break it".[5] Songz' verses include the lyrics "Shawty came in and she caught me red handed staring at her butt",[4] leading to Kameir saying that he "play[s] the charming lothario".[3] HotNewHipHop's Trevor Smith described "Bum Bum" as one of several singles about butts released in 2015.[6]

Release

"Bum Bum" was uploaded to DeLuna's YouTube channel on March 30, 2015.[7] The same day, it was made available only as a digital download on iTunes and DeLuna's official website.[6] "Bum Bum" was included on the compilation album Loading (2016).[8][9] Wass considered the song DeLuna's return to US radio after primarily promoting her music in Europe.[20]

DeLuna said the cover art was inspired by Roman and Greek statues of nude women and Helmut Newton's photography of nude figures.[2][6] She also connected the cover to women's empowerment, saying that she wanted to "bring the essence of empowering women".[2] She said: "It’s empowering to have your body be a piece of art rather than a sex symbol. I want women to know that their flesh and soul are a symbol of power and beauty."[6]

Caribbean producer Noise Cans uploaded a remix of "Bum Bum" on May 20, 2015 on his SoundCloud account; it replaces the samples with a different instrumental.[10] Producer Frank Delour also released a remix, which featured a faster tempo and a more "more sunny and tropical." sound.[11]

Reception

"Bum Bum" received a mixed response from critics. Wass praised it as "a hip-dipping slow jam that celebrates women and makes you want to move" and a "sexy bop".[11] Despite criticizing the title as "juvenile name" for a butt and the song for "overarching silliness", Smith described DeLuna and Songz as "hold[ing] down the reggae-tinged record with winking glee".[6] AllMusic's Andy Kellman panned the song as a "boilerplate reggae-pop fusion" that poorly samples Sister Nancy.[12]

Commercially, "Bum Bum" reached number 32 on the Rhythmic Billboard chart on June 27, 2015. It remained on the chart for five weeks.[13]

Music video

The music video was uploaded to DeLuna's YouTube channel on June 16, 2015.[14] Throughout it, DeLuna "shakes, winds, jiggles, pats, rubs, pops, and drops her butt", although Songz is not included in the video.[3] She appears nude in certain scenes; she said that it was purely sexual and was a commentary on "power".[15] Kameir believed the video would get a continuation due to a "mysterious title screen" at the end.[3]

Wass described the video as "eye-popping" and one of the most "outrageous" released in 2015,[16] and Kameir said that it "proves that subtlety is passé".[3]
