It is a land border crossing point and a defunct railway transit point on the Bangladesh-India border. The corresponding point on the Indian side is Changrabandha in Cooch Behar district.[1] HistoryThe Lalmonirhat-Malbazar metre gauge line was developed by the Bengal Dooars Railway in the closing years of the nineteenth century.[2] With the partition of India in 1947, the Indian side of the line terminated at Changrabandha and the Pakistani side, later Bangladeshi side, at Burimari.[3] Present statusThe line between New Mal Jn. and Changrabandha is now (2016) converted to Broad Gauge. A pair of DMUs have been introduced on this route from Siliguri to Changrabandha via New Mal Jn from 20 January 2016.[4] The Bangladeshi side of the line is still functional but the track is in bad shape with frequent derailments. There are two local trains in a day running at a limited speed of 8–14 km per hour (as against 45 km per hour in normal sections).[5][6] Bangladesh Railway has planned for rehabilitation of the line.[7] Direct buses are available between Siliguri and Changrabandha, and between Dhaka and Burimari.[8] References1. ^{{cite web| url = http://www.lonelyplanet.com/bangladesh/rajshahi-division/burimari |title = Introducing Burimari|last= |first= | publisher= lonely planet | accessdate = 2011-12-10 }} {{Commonscat|Burimari railway station}}{{Railways in Bangladesh}}{{India-Bangladesh land border checkpoints}}{{Rangpur-geo-stub}}2. ^{{cite web| url = http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=Bengal_Dooars_Railway |title = Bengal Dooars Railway |last= |first= | publisher= Fibis | accessdate = 2011-11-20 }} 3. ^{{cite web| url = http://www.irfca.org/faq/faq-inter.html |title = Geography - International |last= |first= | publisher= IRFCA| accessdate = 2011-12-10 }} 4. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.nfr.indianrailways.gov.in/view_detail.jsp?lang=0&id=0,4,268&dcd=947&did=1453121513595EACEB47E6F99B168A98BED1770B6B4D8.web91 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160202073307/http://www.nfr.indianrailways.gov.in/view_detail.jsp?lang=0&id=0%2C4%2C268&dcd=947&did=1453121513595EACEB47E6F99B168A98BED1770B6B4D8.web91 |dead-url=yes |archive-date= 2 February 2016 |title=Train running on the newly converted New Mal Junction-Changrabandha to start |work= |publisher=North East Frontier Railway |accessdate=20 January 2016 |df= }} 5. ^{{cite web| url = http://www.thedailystar.net/newDesign/news-details.php?nid=74750 |title = Lalmonirhat-burimari Route -45 trains derail in 5 months - Lack of sleepers, stone makes the run-down track risky | publisher= The Daily Star, 7 February 2009| accessdate = 2011-12-10 }} 6. ^{{cite web| url = http://www.thefinancialexpress-bd.com/2009/08/10/75691.html |title = For better railway between Lalmonirhat and Burimari| publisher= The Financial Express, 10 August 2009| accessdate = 2011-12-10 }} 7. ^{{cite web| url = http://news.priyo.com/business/2011/09/11/tk-14531-crore-br-projects-dou-36948.html |title = Tk 14,531 crore BR projects to double capacity | publisher=Priyo Internet Life | accessdate = 2011-12-10 }} 8. ^{{cite web| url = https://books.google.com/books?id=D_bYWjJOe9cC&pg=PA299&lpg=PA299&dq=burimari+border&source=bl&ots=cxipEiB6qq&sig=7rgZbhg0ZTgMjfZ9gSFyolX83fM&hl=en&ei=Gc_nTtOPBq6wiQequPjaCA&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=8&ved=0CEoQ6AEwBzgK#v=onepage&q=burimari%20border&f=false |title = North East India|work= p 299 | publisher= lonely planet / Google Books | accessdate = 2011-12-10 }} 2 : Railway stations in Lalmonirhat District|Bangladesh–India border crossings |
