It was built in stages starting about 1750, and consists of a two-story, hipped roof central section flanked by 1 1/2-story wings. On April 1, 1865, the property became the scene of the decisive Battle of Five Forks. During the battle the house served both as headquarters for Union General Merritt and as a military hospital. On the grounds is a monument to six unknown Confederate soldiers killed in the Battle of Five Forks.[3] It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1969.[2] References1. ^{{cite web|title=Virginia Landmarks Register|url=http://www.dhr.virginia.gov/registers/register_counties_cities.htm|publisher=Virginia Department of Historic Resources|accessdate=5 June 2013|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20130921053819/http://www.dhr.virginia.gov/registers/register_counties_cities.htm#|archive-date=2013-09-21|dead-url=yes|df=}} 2. ^1 {{NRISref|version=2010a}} 3. ^{{cite web |url=http://www.dhr.virginia.gov/registers/Counties/Dinwiddie/026-0025_Burnt_Quarter_1969_Final_Nomination.pdf |title=National Register of Historic Places Inventory/Nomination: Burnt Quarter |author=Virginia Historic Landmarks Commission Staff| date=August 1969|publisher=Virginia Department of Historic Resources}} and Accompanying photo External links
