In 1998, he established another new music band called Watermelon including Anh Tu, Tuan Hung and Tuong Van. However Watermelon was disbanded in 2000 and he started his solo career.

National success

He gained much success as he was invited to perform in many national and local shows.

He also performed in big music shows and events such as Dong Thoi Gian 2002 show, consisting plenty of famous songwriters and singers of Vietnam, alongside Duyen Dang Viet Nam, Green Wave and Nhip Cau Am Nhac,...

In May 2001, he also played a role of a play by Ho Chi Minh City's Television Broadcast Station. His acting received positive reviews but it didn't remark much due to incomplete script. However, he impressed the audience and was named as "multitalent boy" by Tuoi Tre Newspaper. In September of same year, he participated in a football match against Hongkong actor football team as charity activity for Vietnam Deaf People Foundation.

Abroad touring: 2001-2003

Since the end of 2001, the movement of bringing singers to perform abroad by Ho Chi Minh City's Performance Organization Company had development and gained much success.Bang Kieu and artist crew had a 1 month tour as the request by Vietnamese Community in East Europe. Previously, he had performed in some music shows in America as well as learning studio techniques. He also performed in Australia in 2002.

After the release of album Chuyen La, he nearly vanished in national shows due to be busy touring between America and Vietnam to record his second album, as well as assisting Trizzie Phuong Trinh in business and preparing for the wedding. Beside singing, he was also acting and doing business with Phuong Trinh, including music tea room and coffee shop in Ho Chi Minh City. In May 2002, the organization of Duyen Dang Viet Nam invited him to join that year's show but he denied as he was being so busy in recording new album.

From September 2002, he got married and relocated in America. Later he showed up in a music festival in California. For a period of time, there were some protests from Vietnamese-American as they were doubtful that Bang Kieu was assigned to widely spread "culture movement" of Vietnam Communism in America. During a show in 2003, he shared that he would like to be a part of the community. He was cheerfully welcomed in many places of America and Canada. He also performed in Australia, Philippines, Netherlands, Germany and Czech Republic.

Incident: 2003-2004

In middle of November 2003, he came back to Hanoi to visit family. In November 25th, website Tin Tuc Vietnam Thoi Doi Moi by Bureau of Culture and Information posted an interview titled Kieu Bang Kieu. The interview stirred lots of confusion and disagreement among artists and oversea community and Vietnam even, including the statement regarding he was the highest paid artist among other Vietnamese artists in America, that he belonged to the generation of "enthusiastically dispelling Vietnamese-American music off Vietnam", that he didn't show up in abroad music shows on purpose, as well as some verdicts about the taste and working ethnic of music shows in Vietnam....alongside many hidden meaning statements. In December 27th 2003, in a meeting, the leader of Vietnamese Community in Sacramento had an official statement regarding the dispel of Bang Kieu for having "internal activities assigned from Vietnam Communism in order to corrupt Vietnamese refugees oversea". Facing the incident, he clarified that "the interview was twisted for bad purposes", that he did have an interview with the journalist but it was regarding common stories, unlike the statement in the interview.

After coming back to America, he made some controversial statement as clarification for the incident, as: "In most recent visit, I had denied many big music shows to prove my will toward the land of freedom...Hopefully everyone will be pleased to accept me as a new member of the community". This statement was said to be betrayal by Cong An Nhan Dan Newspaper. Following Cong An Nhan Dan Newspaper, during a show, a manager named Viet Dzung to have "Saigon old regime originality" had appointed someone to insert the flag of Saigon old regime in the bouquet so when Bang Kieu was waving the bouquet, it means he was waving the flag. This image was recorded and exaggerated for political purposes. Accordingly, all of the songs performed by Bang Kieu at Paris By Night shows was planned by Viet Dzung as a mean for "political purposes".

From February 2004, Bureau of Art - Performance submitted a statement for temporarily postponing his shows. In November 22th, they made a new statement to related agencies and individuals not to use any song and performance of Bang Kieu at any cost. Following the statement, his citizenship was officially taken (it wasn't clear of who had made the decision and what is the citizenship).

Being touched by the love of the audience, he shared that "hopefully I could perform for Vietnamese audience in Vietnam". Also in this trip, his performance right was brought up into discussion. In an interview with an online website, it was said that there was yet any information regarding his will to perform again in Vietnam, however if he wanted to perform again, a submission would be required.

In March 2010, he suddenly came back to Vietnam and joined the birthday party of singer Hong Nhung. Afterward, during the tour in Phnom Penh in December 2011, he and family came back to Vietnam for 3rd time. He held a fan meeting at Club Passion in Ha Noi.
