(In 2014 Craven, Edwards and Cowley proposed that the species be renamed Melaleuca arcuata.)[1] It is a shrub with prickly, cylindrical leaves with a slight, upward curve and bright red flowers in small groups near the older leaves. DescriptionCalothamnus arcuatus grows to a height and width of about {{convert|1.5|m|ft|sigfig=1}} with an underground swelling called a lignotuber. Its leaves are needle-like, mostly {{convert|2-5|mm|in|sigfig=1}} long and {{convert|0.7-1.1|mm|in|sigfig=1}} wide, circular in cross section and tapering at the end to a sharp point. They are glabrous, spreading from the stem and curve slightly upwards.[2]The flowers are bright red and arranged in small clusters amongst the older leaves. The outer edge of the flower cup (the hypanthium) and the sepals are densely covered with soft hairs. The petals are {{convert|2.5-3|mm|in|sigfig=2}} long and have a jagged edge. The stamens are arranged in claw-like bundles {{convert|22-25|mm|in|sigfig=2}} long. Flowering occurs in autumn and early winter and is followed by fruits which are woody, almost spherical capsules, {{convert|5-6|mm|in|sigfig=2}} long.[2] Taxonomy and namingCalothamnus arcuatus was first formally described in 2010 by Alex George from a specimen found near Enaebba.[2][3] The specific epithet (arcuatus) is a Latin word meaning "curved"[4] referring to the curved leaves of this species.[2]Distribution and habitatCalothamnus arcuatus occurs in two separate areas - one to the north east of Eneabba and the other to the north east of Arrino, in the Avon Wheatbelt and Geraldton Sandplains biogeographic regions.[2][5] It grows in sand, sometimes with lateritic gravel on sandplains and ridges.[6]ConservationCalothamnus arcuatus is classified as "Priority Two" by the Western Australian government Department of Parks and Wildlife[5] meaning that it is poorly known and from one or a few locations.[7]References1. ^{{cite journal|last1=Craven|first1=Lyn A.|last2=Edwards|first2=Robert D.|last3=Cowley|first3=Kirsten J.|title=New combinations and names in Melaleuca (Myrtaceae)|journal=Taxon|date=30 June 2014|volume=63|issue=3|pages=663–670|doi=10.12705/633.38|url=http://www.ingentaconnect.com/content/iapt/tax/2014/00000063/00000003/art00017|accessdate=23 July 2015}} {{Taxonbar|from=Q17590507}}2. ^1 2 3 4 {{cite journal|last1=George|first1=Alex S.|title=Calothamnus (Myrtaceae): precursor paper to Flora of Australia|journal=Nuytsia|date=2010|volume=20|pages=183–185|url=https://florabase.dpaw.wa.gov.au/science/nuytsia/588.pdf|accessdate=26 July 2015}} 3. ^{{cite web|title=Calothamnus arcuatus|url=https://biodiversity.org.au/boa/instance/apni/662761|publisher=APNI|accessdate=26 July 2015}} 4. ^{{cite web|title=arcuatus|url=https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/arcuatus|publisher=Wiktionary|accessdate=26 July 2015}} 5. ^1 {{cite web|title=Calothamnus arcuatus|url=https://florabase.dpaw.wa.gov.au/browse/profile/35697|publisher=FloraBase|accessdate=26 July 2015}} 6. ^{{cite web|title=Warrego Energy PTY Ltd West Erregulla-2 Exploration Well Environmental Impact Statement|url=https://consultation.epa.wa.gov.au/seven-day-comment-on-referrals/west-erregulla-2-exploration-well/supporting_documents/West%20Erugulla%202%20Exploration%20Well%20Referral%20Document%20Nov%20.pdf|publisher=Warrego Energy P/L|accessdate=26 July 2015}} 7. ^{{cite web|title=Conservation codes for Western Australian Flora and Fauna|url=http://www.dpaw.wa.gov.au/images/documents/plants-animals/threatened-species/Listings/conservation_code_definitions.pdf|publisher=Government of Western Australia Department of Parks and Wildlife|accessdate=25 July 2015}} 5 : Calothamnus|Myrtales of Australia|Flora of Western Australia|Plants described in 2010|Endemic flora of Western Australia |
