It is a tall, spreading shrub with needle-shaped, prickly leaves and bright red flowers with five stamen bundles. (In 2014 Craven, Edwards and Cowley proposed that the species be renamed Melaleuca phellosa.)[1] DescriptionCalothamnus phellosus is a shrub growing to a height of about {{convert|4|m|ft|sigfig=1}} and a width of about {{convert|6|m|ft|sigfig=1}}. Its leaves are needle-like, mostly {{convert|25-80|mm|in|sigfig=1}} long and {{convert|0.7-1.1|mm|in|sigfig=1}} wide, circular in cross section and tapering to a sharp, prickly point.[2]The flowers have 5 sepals and 5 petals. The stamens are bright red and are arranged in 5 claw-like bundles, each about {{convert|22-40|mm|in|sigfig=2}} long. The petals are {{convert|4.0-4.5|mm|in|sigfig=2}} long. Flowering occurs from September to November and is followed by fruits which are woody, flattened spherical capsules, {{convert|7-11|mm|in|sigfig=1}} long, often tightly packed together and which develop a corky bark.[2] Taxonomy and namingCalothamnus phellosus was first formally described in 2010 by Alex George in Nuytsia from a specimen found in the north of the Murchison River near Eurardy.[2][3] The specific epithet (phellosus) is an Ancient Greek word meaning "corky" referring to the outer surface of the fruit of this species.[2]Distribution and habitatCalothamnus phellosus occurs in the Avon Wheatbelt, Geraldton Sandplains and Yalgoo biogeographic regions.[4]ConservationCalothamnus phellosus is classified as "not threatened" by the Western Australian government department of parks and wildlife.[4]References1. ^{{cite journal|last1=Craven|first1=Lyn A.|last2=Edwards|first2=Robert D.|last3=Cowley|first3=Kirsten J.|title=New combinations and names in Melaleuca (Myrtaceae)|journal=Taxon|date=30 June 2014|volume=63|issue=3|pages=666|doi=10.12705/633.38|url=http://www.ingentaconnect.com/content/iapt/tax/2014/00000063/00000003/art00017|accessdate=23 July 2015}} {{Taxonbar|from=Q17590503}}2. ^1 2 3 {{cite journal|last1=George|first1=Alex S.|title=Calothamnus (Myrtaceae): precursor paper to Flora of Australia|journal=Nuytsia|date=2010|volume=20|pages=193–195|url=https://florabase.dpaw.wa.gov.au/science/nuytsia/588.pdf|accessdate=1 August 2015}} 3. ^{{cite web|title=Calothamnus phellosus|url=https://biodiversity.org.au/boa/instance/apni/662793|publisher=APNI|accessdate=1 August 2015}} 4. ^1 {{cite web|title=Calothamnus phellosus|url=https://florabase.dpaw.wa.gov.au/browse/profile/35696|publisher=FloraBase|accessdate=1 August 2015}} 4 : Calothamnus|Myrtales of Australia|Plants described in 2010|Endemic flora of Western Australia |
