It is similar to other subspecies of Calothamnus quadrifidus except that its leaves are linear and somewhat rough and scaly and the stamen bundles are relatively short. (The subspecies petraeus and seminudus have similar leaves to obtusus but their stamen bundles are longer.) DescriptionCalothamnus quadrifidus subsp. obtusus is an erect or straggly shrub which sometimes grows to a height of {{convert|3|m|ft|sigfig=1}} and has a lignotuber. Its leaves are flat and linear with the outer part slightly expanded, {{convert|10-35|mm|in|sigfig=1}} long and {{convert|1-4|mm|in|sigfig=1}} wide.[1]The flowers are red and arranged in clusters, usually on one side of the stem amongst the older leaves. The stamens are arranged in 4 claw-like bundles, each about {{convert|18-25|mm|in|sigfig=1}} long. Flowering mainly occurs from August to October and is followed by fruits which are woody, roughly spherical capsules, {{convert|6-10|mm|in|sigfig=1}} long.[1] Taxonomy and namingCalothamnus quadrifidus subsp. obtusus was first formally described in 2010 by Alex George in Nuytsia.[2] It had originally been described in 1867 by George Bentham as a form of Calothamnus quadrifidus (Calothamnus quadrifidus f. obtusus) from a specimen collected on the Murchison River by Augustus Oldfield.[1][3] The name "obtusus" is a Latin word meaning "blunt" or "dull".[4]Distribution and habitatCalothamnus quadrifidus subsp. obtusus is found between Shark Bay, Kalbarri and Mullewa[1] in the Carnarvon, Geraldton Sandplains and Yalgoo biogeographic regions.[5] It usually grows in sand in kwongan.[1]ConservationCalothamnus quadrifidus subsp. obtusus is classified as "not threatened" by the Western Australian government department of parks and wildlife[5]References1. ^1 2 3 4 {{cite journal|last1=George|first1=Alex S.|last2=Gibson|first2=Neil|title=A revision of Calothamnus quadrifidus (Myrtaceae)|journal=Nuytsia|date=2010|volume=20|page=70|url=https://florabase.dpaw.wa.gov.au/science/nuytsia/587.pdf|accessdate=3 August 2015}} {{Taxonbar|from=Q28813506}}2. ^{{cite web|title=Calothamnus quadrifidus subsp. obtusus|url=https://biodiversity.org.au/boa/instance/apni/662574|publisher=APNI|accessdate=3 August 2015}} 3. ^{{cite web|title=Calothamnus quadrifidus f. obtusus|url=https://biodiversity.org.au/boa/instance/apni/527737|publisher=APNI|accessdate=3 August 2015}} 4. ^{{cite web|title=obtusus|url=https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/obtusus |publisher=Wiktionary|accessdate=3 August 2015}} 5. ^1 {{cite web|title=Calothamnus quadrifidus subsp. obtusus |url=https://florabase.dpaw.wa.gov.au/browse/profile/35759|publisher=FloraBase|accessdate=3 August 2015}} 5 : Calothamnus|Myrtales of Australia|Flora of Western Australia|Plants described in 2010|Plant subspecies |
