词条 | Castell Mawr Rock |
释义 |
It is located between the village of Red Wharf Bay and the promontory where St. David's Holiday Park is sited. The closest large villages are Pentraeth and Benllech. Currently, the site appears to be being used as a storage/dumping area for inert waste. The site is notable for being the only location on Anglesey displaying genuine karst development in a series of small caves and solutional cavities. Castell Mawr was selected by the Countryside Council for Wales because of its geological interest, as it provides exposures of carboniferous limestone strata. The rock consists of limestone and sandstone layers, part of the Benllech Limestone formed during the Brigantian Stage of the lower Carboniferous period. The limestone was once mined and exported to other centres in the UK and Ireland.[2] References1. ^{{cite web|title=Guide|url=http://www.visitoruk.com/Beaumaris/castell-mawr-C567-AT5276.html|website=visitoruk|publisher=Visitor UK|accessdate=24 October 2014}} {{coord|53.3103|-4.2061|type:landmark_region:GB|display=title}}2. ^{{cite book|last1=Lewis|first1=Samuel|title=A Topographical Dictionary of Wales|date=1840|publisher=Lewis & Co|location=London|pages=Vol. 2 LLA|edition=2nd|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=Gp9BAQAAMAAJ&pg=PT37&lpg=PT37&dq=Castell+Mawr+%2B+limestone+mine&source=bl&ots=Ht88NTtOa2&sig=ODDpT-7M3PAyBsg8FmD4SMssJbg&hl=en&sa=X&ei=PyNKVNWVAY-d7ga9l4DwCg&ved=0CDAQ6AEwAjgK#v=onepage&q=Castell%20Mawr%20%2B%20limestone%20mine&f=false|accessdate=24 October 2014}} 2 : Mountains and hills of Anglesey|Pentraeth |
