In 1996 the Institute superseded St Patrick's College, {{NSWcity|Manly}} and St Columba’s College, {{NSWcity|Springwood}} (itself earlier superseded in 1977) as the sole ecclesiastical theology faculty for the Catholic Church in New South Wales.
