It is known only from the Black Rock Mountains in Humboldt and Pershing Counties in the northwestern part of the state. It grows on dry, rocky slopes and outcrops at elevations of {{convert|1300|-|1500|m|disp=flip}}.[1][2][3]Caulanthus barnebyi is a glabrous, perennial herb up to {{convert|110|cm|disp=flip}} tall. It has basal leaves up to {{convert|16|cm|disp=flip}} long, plus smaller leaves farther up the stem.
