The former keep for the barracks (known locally as The Castle, Cecily Hill) stands at the entrance to Cirencester Park. HistoryThe barracks were built in 1857 as the Royal North Gloucestershire Militia Armoury.[1] In 1881, following the Childers Reforms, the barracks became the depot of the 4th Battalion of the Gloucestershire Regiment. During the Second World War they became the local base for the Home Guard.[2] After the Army had no more use for the barracks, the Castle became a commercial building owned by the Bathurst Estate. Recently it was used by Cirencester College, who gave it the name 'The Castle'.[3] Cirencester College moved out of the Castle in 2013 but the Castle is still used for commercial purposes.[4] It is a Grade II* listed building.[5] References1. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.heritage-explorer.co.uk/web/he/searchdetail.aspx?id=1969&crit=tower|title=Cecily Hill Barracks, Cirencester, Gloucestershire|publisher=Heritage Explorer|accessdate=26 May 2014}} 2. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/ww2peopleswar/stories/18/a7788018.shtml|title=Bob's R.A.M.C. service in the Far East|publisher=BBC|accessdate=26 May 2014}} 3. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.dance-family.com/militia.htm|title=The Dance Family of Clearwell|accessdate=26 May 2014}} 4. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.cirencester.ac.uk/news/?id=1576|title=Statement re Press Reports of Business School Closure|publisher=Cirencester College|accessdate=26 May 2014}} 5. ^{{National Heritage List for England| num=1187434 |desc=The Old Barracks |grade=II* |accessdate=2 November 2015}} 4 : Installations of the British Army|Barracks in England|Grade II* listed buildings in Gloucestershire|1857 establishments in England |
