Founded in 2003 by Sabrina Zarco and Randi Romo,[1] the organization is currently headed by Romo[2] and is headquartered in downtown Little Rock. CAR has been at the forefront of many LGBT-related news events in Arkansas, such as the 2004 ballot initiative banning same-sex marriage (the "We the People Project" was created to educate Arkansans on its LGBT population[3]), the 2008 ballot initiative banning unmarried couples from adopting children,[4] the 2010 controversy surrounding school board member Clint McCance's anti-gay comments via Facebook,[5][6] and the 2011 decision by the newspaper The Batesville Daily Guard to omit a dead man's male lover from his obituary.[7][8] CAR is also well known for its "Safe Schools Initiative," tackling the issue of bullying, including the bullying of children who may be perceived to be lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender.[9] No gay-straight alliances existed in Arkansas schools when CAR was founded in 2003; by the beginning of 2012, thirteen had been organized, with CAR's help, across the state.[10] References1. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.syncweekly.com/photos/2009/mar/18/28296/ |title=Sync Weekly photo: Sabrina Zarco and Randi Romo |publisher=Syncweekly.com |date=2009-03-18 |accessdate=2014-06-29}} 2. ^[https://archive.is/20130414185239/http://www.equalityfederation.org/template.aspx?id=825 Equality Federation] 3. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.resistinc.org/newsletters/articles/car-merges-art-and-change |archive-url=https://archive.is/20130415234455/http://www.resistinc.org/newsletters/articles/car-merges-art-and-change |dead-url=yes |archive-date=2013-04-15 |title=Resist.org Newsletter - CAR Merges Art and Change |publisher=Resistinc.org |date= |accessdate=2014-06-29 }} 4. ^{{cite news|url=http://www.fox16.com/news/story/Unmarried-couples-in-limbo-over-adoption-ban/Q_f-XSozO0OKPBY1UBVMfw.cspx |title=Unmarried couples in limbo over adoption ban |publisher=FOX 16 |date=2010-05-13 |accessdate=2014-06-29}} 5. ^{{cite news|last=Koon |first=David |url=http://m.arktimes.com/gyrobase/facebook-clint-mccance-and-a-teaching-moment-about-hate/Content?oid=1573608&showFullText=true |title=Facebook, Clint McCance, and a teaching moment about hate |publisher=Arkansas Times |date= |accessdate=2014-06-29}} 6. ^{{cite web|url=http://arkansasmatters.com/fulltext?nxd_id=364816 |title=KARK News - Life Lessons from Pleasant Plains }}{{dead link|date=November 2016 |bot=InternetArchiveBot |fix-attempted=yes }} 7. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.hrc.org/blog/entry/vigil-tomorrow-at-batesville-daily-guard |title=Human Rights Campaign - Vigil Tomorrow at the Batesville Daily Guard |publisher=Hrc.org |date=2011-06-29 |accessdate=2014-06-29 |deadurl=yes |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20140905234732/http://www.hrc.org/blog/entry/vigil-tomorrow-at-batesville-daily-guard |archivedate=2014-09-05 |df= }} 8. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.glaad.org/releases/06282011batesville |title=Glaad, Hrc, Local Arkansas Advocates Call For Newspaper To Apologize For Omitting Partner From Obituary |publisher=Glaad.org |date=2011-06-28 |accessdate=2014-06-29}} 9. ^KUAR National Public Radio - Gay in Arkansas{{dead link|date=June 2014}} 10. ^{{cite web|url=http://gsanetwork.org/news/blog/arkansas-and-kentucky-join-national-assocation/01/11/12 |title=Arkansas and Kentucky Join the National Association |publisher=GSA Network |date=2012-01-11 |accessdate=2014-06-29}} 2 : LGBT political advocacy groups in Arkansas|Organizations established in 2003 |
