CWE specializes in the construction of water and hydropower projects but its work runs the gamut including road and bridge, power transmission, drainage and sewage treatment systems, dredging, port maintenance, and interior design. Based on international contracting revenue in 2014 it was the 74th-largest international construction and engineering company according to Engineering News-Record.[1] Engineering projectsThe company has completed projects in China, the rest of Asia, Africa, and Europe, focusing especially on hydropower projects in developing countries. In battling for international contracts, CWE is a head-on rival with Sinohydro, another Chinese firm with a hydropower specialization, having ferociously competed with Sinohydro for the Karuma hydropower project in Uganda in 2013; in the end it lost to its rival.[2] It has had ethical lapses in competing for business with the World Bank debarment from bidding for a period of 3 years due to "integrity issues".[2]
Wind powerAlthough mainly associated with hydropower, CWE is also involved in wind power. Its parent company, CTE, seeks to develop a 49.5 MW wind farm in Thatta, Pakistan, and in 2011 signed on its subsidiary CWE and another company, China Huashui Development Corporation (CHDC), to install turbines manufactured by Goldwind.[7] In 2013, the company planned to design, build and operate a 300 MW wind farm in Jordan with joint venture partner Goldwind.[8] References1. ^{{cite news|title=The Top 250 International Contractors|url=http://www.enr.com/toplists/2015_Top_250_International_Contractors1|newspaper=Engineering News Record|year=2015}} {{Construction and civil engineering companies of China}}{{DEFAULTSORT:China International Water and Electric Corporation}}2. ^{{cite news|title=WB asks development partners to blacklist Chinese company|url=http://www.monitor.co.ug/News/National/WB-asks-development-partners-to-blacklist-Chinese-company/-/688334/2470560/-/or8ds9z/-/index.html|date=October 1, 2014}} 3. ^{{cite news|title=China-built hydropower plant in Macedonia under full swing|newspaper=China Daily|date=May 30, 2003}} 4. ^1 {{cite news|title=Karuma, Isimba to boost Uganda’s energy needs|url=http://www.observer.ug/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=27926%3Akaruma-isimba-to-boost-ugandas-energy-needs&catid=38%3Abusiness&Itemid=68|newspaper=The Observer|date=October 8, 2013}} 5. ^{{cite news|title=Chinese company clinches deal for Cameroon hydropower project|url=http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/business/2011-08/19/content_13153649.htm|newspaper=China Daily|date=August 19, 2011}} 6. ^{{cite news|title=China Wins Africa Friends by Building Dam in Ebola Outbreak|url=https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-09-29/china-wins-african-friends-by-building-dam-during-ebola-outbreak|agency=Bloomberg L.P.|date=September 29, 2015}} 7. ^{{cite news|title=Deal signed for 49.5MW wind farm in Thatta|url=http://dawn.com/news/628530/deal-signed-for-495mw-wind-farm-in-thatta|newspaper=The Dawn|date=May 13, 2011}} 8. ^{{cite news|title=Jordan, China in $2.5 bn deal for oil-shale plant|url=http://www.foxnews.com/world/2013/09/19/jordan-china-in-25-bn-deal-for-oil-shale-plant/|newspaper=AFP|date=September 19, 2013}} 2 : Government-owned companies of China|Construction and civil engineering companies of China |
