It is native to eastern Asia, where it is found in southern China, Korea, and Japan.[2] Its natural habitat is in open mountain forests.[3] It is a common species in Japan,[4] and is often found in disturbed secondary forests.[5] It is an upright shrub growing to {{convert|3|m|abbr=on}}. Its leaves are deciduous, dark green, and are {{convert|5|cm|0|abbr=on}} long. Racemes of small, fragrant, white flowers {{convert|15|cm|0|abbr=on}} long are produced in late summer and autumn. Mature specimens have peeling bark.
