Guitarist Jeff Loomis is featured as a guest soloist on "Square Circles". Critical reception{{Album ratings| rev1 = Brave Words & Bloody Knuckles | rev1score = 8.0[12] }} Aaron Small at Brave Words & Bloody Knuckles gave Concrete Gardens a rating of 8.0, praising MacAlpine's skill at creating instrumental melodies in place of lyrics, "thereby building unique songs full of colourful character." He listed "Exhibitionist Blvd", "Man in a Metal Cage", "Napoleon's Puppet" and "Confessions of a Medieval Monument" as highlights, but criticism was directed at the final track, the instrumental piano piece "Maiden's Wish", for sounding out of place on the album and more appropriate for the early 1900s silent film era.[11] Track listing{{Track listing| title1 = Exhibitionist Blvd | length1 = 4:28 | title2 = The King's Rhapsody | length2 = 4:45 | title3 = Man in a Metal Cage | length3 = 4:20 | title4 = Poison Cookies | length4 = 5:06 | title5 = Epic | length5 = 5:00 | title6 = Napoleon's Puppet | length6 = 5:13 | title7 = Sierra Morena | length7 = 4:52 | title8 = Square Circles | length8 = 5:12 | title9 = Red Giant | length9 = 5:10 | title10 = Confessions of a Medieval Monument | length10 = 5:43 | title11 = Concrete Gardens | length11 = 5:03 | title12 = Maiden's Wish | length12 = 4:19 | total_length = 59:16 }} Personnel
