Van Quaelberg began his career in the service of the Dutch East India Company in Masulipatam, India, where he became Commander in 1652.[3] He was transferred to the Cape in 1666. Two years later he fell out of favour and was fired in 1668 after lending help to a French fleet which he did not know was an enemy because news of the outbreak of war spread slowly. His good name was later restored{{by whom|date=August 2015}} and he was promoted to Governor of Banda in East India. Van Quaelberg died on 3 February 1687 in Republic of the Seven United Netherlands.
