Built in 1936–37 as a Public Works Administration project, it is the city's third-oldest operating elementary school.[2] Coronado School was added to the New Mexico State Register of Cultural Properties[5] and the National Register of Historic Places in 1996.[4] HistoryThe school was built by the PWA at a cost of $125,000 and opened in 1937.[6] It was designed by Louis G. Hesselden, who was the architect for Albuquerque Public Schools at the time.[7] Coronado operated as an elementary school until 1975, when it was converted to administrative use. In 2006, with Downtown Albuquerque experiencing a resurgence and existing inner-city schools becoming crowded, APS began exploring the possibility of reopening Coronado. After securing funding for this purpose, the district embarked on an $8.3 million project to return the school to service. This included restoring the main building to its original appearance and making it ADA-compliant, as well as adding a new gym, cafeteria, library, media center, and playground.[6] Coronado Elementary officially reopened for the 2009–10 school year on August 24, 2009.[8] References1. ^{{cite web|title=New Mexico State and National Registers|url=http://www.nmhistoricpreservation.org/programs/registers.html|publisher=New Mexico Historic Preservation Commission|accessdate=2013-03-13}} 2. ^1 {{cite news | last=Schoellkopf | first=Andrea | title=APS Considers Reopening Coronado | newspaper=Albuquerque Journal | date=September 1, 2006 | location=NM | page=A1}} 3. ^{{cite news | last=Schoellkopf | first=Andrea | title=Old and New - Coronado Elementary Could Help Ease Crowding | newspaper=Albuquerque Journal | date=April 24, 2007 | location=NM}} 4. ^1 {{NRISref|2009a}} 5. ^{{cite web | title=Properties by County | url=http://www.nmhistoricpreservation.org/documents/PropertiesByCounty.pdf | publisher=New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs | accessdate=29 April 2011}} 6. ^1 {{cite news | last=Schoellkopf | first=Andrea | title=Hallowed halls | newspaper=Albuquerque Journal | date=June 9, 2009 | location=NM | page=B1}} 7. ^{{cite web | title=Coronado Elementary School | url=http://cherryseereames.com/projects/educational/campus_planning/coronado.php | publisher=Cherry/See/Reames Architects | accessdate=30 June 2011}} 8. ^{{cite news | last=Schoellkopf | first=Andrea | title=Four Schools To Delay Opening | newspaper=Albuquerque Journal | date=July 25, 2009 | location=NM | page=A1}} External links
