Céline S. Cousteau (born June 6, 1972) is a socio-environmental advocate and public figure. She is known for her work as documentary film director, producer, explorer, artist, public speaker, brand ambassador and designer. She is the Founder/Director of CauseCentric Productions and Co-Founder/ Chairman of the Board of the Céline Cousteau Film Fellowship. Céline is the daughter of ocean explorer and filmmaker Jean-Michel Cousteau and granddaughter of Jacques Yves Cousteau.

Early Years & Personal Life

Cousteau was born in California to Jean-Michel Cousteau, a renowned documentary-maker and environmental advocate, and Anne-Marie Cousteau, a former expedition photographer.[3] She is the sister of Fabien Cousteau, an ocean explorer and shark advocate, and granddaughter of Jacques Yves Cousteau.[3] She grew up between their family homes in France and the United States, and as the granddaughter of legendary explorer and oceanographer Jacques Cousteau, Celine spent much of her youth aboard his famous research vessel Calypso, plying the seas in search of answers to the oceans' greatest mysteries.[4]

One of her first major expeditions was at age nine when she journeyed to the Amazon with her family. There they spent 18 months navigating its waters in areas that were still largely unknown to the outside world. It was on this trip she began to learn about environmental stewardship and local knowledge of the forest.[4] This connection would inspire many returns to the Amazon and later inform a number of indigenous-focused works such as her 2016 "Tribute to Tribes" collection with Swarovski, and her 2018 documentary "Tribes On the Edge."[5][4]

She attended the United Nations International School in New York City, and graduated from Skidmore College in 1994, where she majored in psychology and minored in studio art. She received her master's degree in International and Intercultural Management from the School for International Training.[6]

She has one son with her partner Çapkin van Alphen, an Australian cameraman.[3]

Career

Through CauseCentric Productions, Céline Cousteau attempts to create multi-media content to extend the reach of humanitarian and environmental stories. The Céline Cousteau Film Fellowship attempts to allow young filmmakers, creatives, and activists to motivate change through storytelling.

Throughout her career, Cousteau has worked on over 18 documentaries as director, producer, and presenter. Besides the short films she produces under CauseCentric, she has spent years working on a major documentary film and engagement campaign, Tribes on the Edge.[7] This project began as a result of a request by the tribes of the Vale do Javari, Brazilian Amazon for Céline to tell the world their story. The project will be launched in the fall of 2016.

Céline Cousteau's associations include: member of the World Economic Forum's (2012-2016),[8] Guest Designer for Swarovski,[9] Ambassador for The TreadRight Foundation,[10] ambassador for Jane Goodall's Roots & Shoots program,[11] and Keen Footwear brand ambassador{{Citation needed|reason=old link did not reference Celine|date=May 2017}}.
