{{short description|Irish video game journalist}}Daniel[1] "Danny" O'Dwyer is an Irish video game journalist and documentary producer. He gained recognition through his work as a host and producer on the video game website GameSpot.com, where he hosted shows including Escape from Mount Stupid, Random Encounter, The Point and The Lobby.[2]

He is the founder of Noclip, a crowdfunded media company dedicated to creating video game documentaries. He was nominated as Trending Gamer of the Year at The Game Awards 2016 [3][4]. Prior to founding Noclip, O'Dwyer was a recurring co-host on Kinda Funny's Games Daily show, alongside industry counterpart Greg Miller.[5]

Noclip

On September 5, 2016, O'Dwyer created a YouTube channel named Noclip. According to a trailer released on September 12, 2016, O'Dwyer says:

"Gamers deserve our media that reflects our passions, a press that uses its access to tell stories about how games get made, the people who play them, and the ways in which they reflect our lives—stories that make us proud to be gamers."[6]
He says that the title comes from "Noclip mode", a video game cheat that allows players to walk through walls. “With [Noclip]," says O'Dwyer, "we’re going to walk through gaming’s walls and take a peek at the other side.”[6]

Noclip is a video project focused on creating high-quality video game documentaries. Noclip currently has over 280,000 subscribers and 9.8 million views[7] over these videos. O'Dwyer also creates content for his personal YouTube channel. He currently has over 40,000 subscribers and over 1 million [8] views over all of his personal videos. O'Dwyer was inspired to use crowd-funding instead of the traditional advertising model of most video game websites because he believes that a focus on clicks has influenced the quality of games journalism.[9] In a video confession on December 13, 2016, O'Dwyer said, "I want […] the only thing to matter about games coverage to be the quality of the videos, the quality of the work."[10]

Danny O'Dwyer launched Noclip via a Patreon campaign and is supported through crowdfunding. NoClip's first project provided viewers with insight into the hit videogame Rocket League.[11] The second project covered a history of Doom,[12][13] revealing some previously unreleased footage from Doom 4.[14][15][16] For the third project, Danny introduced the company's first in its "Noclip Profiles" series, traveling to Ireland "to talk to John Romero about his incredible career making some of the most influential first person shooters of all time."[17] In the fourth project, a multi-game documentary entitled Rediscovering Mystery, Noclip's YouTube page stated: "we talk to Jonathan Blow [lead designer of The Witness], Derek Yu [lead designer of Spelunky] and Jim Crawford [lead designer of Frog Fractions and Frog Fractions 2] about the challenge of retaining mystery & player discovery in the age of the internet."[18]
