The Danish entry was selected through the national final Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2013, organised by the Danish broadcaster Danmarks Radio (DR). Emmelie de Forest represented Denmark with the song "Only Teardrops", which qualified from the first semi-final of the competition and won the contest, placing 1st in the final with 281 points.[2][2] Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2013On 28 May 2012, two days after the Eurovision Song Contest 2012 in Azerbaijan, DR announced their intention to participate in the 2013 contest.[3] The national selection, Dansk Melodi Grand Prix, remained the same as in previous years. A selection jury selected six songs in open competition among the songs submitted to the broadcaster. Additionally, four participants were invited based on editorial considerations. In total, ten songs participated in the national final.[4] Jan Lagermand Lundme, DR Head of Entertainment, said that DR focussed on selecting songs that had a strong chorus.[5][6] When the deadline for submitting entries to Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2013 had passed on 24 September 2012, 692 songs had been received - the highest number of submissions since 1988.[7] Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2013 took place on 26 January 2013 at Jyske Bank Boxen in Herning, which has an audience capacity of up to 15,000.[6][8] The show was presented by Lise Rønne, Louise Wolff and Sofie Lassen-Kahlke.[6] The winning song was selected in two rounds of voting. In the first round, the combination of viewer SMS voting and a professional jury selected the top 3 songs which proceeded to the superfinal. In the second round, viewers and the professional jury voted again, however, each member of the jury awarded 1, 2, and 3 points to the songs, with 3 points being awarded to the song they preferred the most. The five members of the jury awarded a total of 30 points. The SMS viewer vote was also translated into 30 points, with each song receiving the proportion of those 30 points based on the percentage of the total votes they earned. For example, if a song received 50% of the viewer votes, it would be awarded 15 points. In both voting rounds, the viewer's SMS vote accounted for 50% of the results, while the jury votes accounted for the remaining 50%.[9] The members of the professional jury were announced on 14 January 2013:[10]
FinalThe ten songs and artists competing in Dansk Melodi Grand Prix were revealed on 16 January 2013.[11] The intervals acts that performed during the show were last years winner Soluna Samay, 1980 and 1987 Eurovision Song Contest winner Johnny Logan, 1976 Eurovision Song Contest winners Brotherhood of Man and 1984 Eurovision Song Contest winners Herreys.[12][13] After all ten songs were performed, Simone, Emmelie de Forest and Mohamed Ali were selected as the top 3.[2] Emmelie de Forest won Dansk Melodi Grand Prix with the song "Only Teardrops" after receiving 11 points from the jury and 15 points (50% of the viewer vote) from the public.[14]
Superfinal
At EurovisionTo ensure fair ticket distribution in the semifinals, the Eurovision Reference Group decided on 7 November 2012 that Denmark would compete in the first semi-final on 14 May.[15] In the first semifinal, the producers of the show decided that Denmark would perform 5th, following Croatia and preceding Russia.[16] On stage, Emmelie de Forest was joined by two drummers: Morten Specht Larsen and Jacob Baagøe Thomsen, and by three backing singers: Anne Murillo, Heidi Degn and Anders Øhrstrøm.[17] Denmark qualified from the first semi-final, placing 1st and scoring 167 points.[18][19] At the first semi-final winners' press conference, Denmark was allocated to perform in the second half of the final.[20] In the final, the producers of the show decided that Denmark would perform 18th, following Hungary and preceding Iceland.[21] Denmark won the 2013 Contest placing 1st and scoring 281 points.[2] In Denmark, both the semi-finals and the final were broadcast on DR1, with commentary provided by Ole Tøpholm.[22] The national jury that provided 50% of the Danish vote in the first semi-final and the final consisted of: Jørgen de Mylius (television and radio host), Soluna Samay (singer), Chief 1 (Lars Pedersen) (producer), Kaya Brüel (singer and actress) and Jimmy Colding (singer).[23] The Danish spokesperson in the grand final was Sofie Lassen-Kahlke.[24] Points awarded to Denmark
