DistributionIt has a circumpolar distribution across much of the northern parts of the Northern Hemisphere: much of Canada, the northwestern United States, northern and central Europe, Russia, China and Japan. It is an indicator of alpine tundra and boreal climates.[2] It is found in mountains and moors often with Calluna and grasses.[3][4][5] DescriptionDiphasiastrum alpinum grows {{convert|10|to|20|cm|in|round=0.5|abbr=on}} tall from stems which grow just under the surface of the ground. The leaves are hollow at the bases.[2] The female stems produce strobili up to {{convert|3|cm|in|round=0.5|abbr=on}}long.[6][7][8]Diphasiastrum alpinum may hybridize with Diphasiastrum sitchense.[2]References1. ^{{cite web|title=Diphasiastrum alpinum|url=http://www.efloras.org/florataxon.aspx?flora_id=1&taxon_id=200002738|work=Flora of North America|accessdate=13 July 2011}} 2. ^1 2 Williams, Tara Y. 1990.
