It was closed down by CEO and owner Joe Ricketts in November 2017 after writers in its New York branch voted to unionize, a move to which Ricketts was opposed.[1] HistoryFounded by Joe Ricketts in November 2009 as "Digital Network Associates",[2] DNAinfo.com began by offering online, hyperlocal coverage for New York City and online coverage for Chicago launched in November 2012.[5] In December 2013, DNAinfo launched a print version coverage by the name, DNAinfo.com.[3] The operational and editorial offices for DNAinfo were in New York and Chicago. DNAinfo is also a registered trademark.[7] In March 2017, DNAinfo purchased the New York media company Gothamist.[4] On November 2, 2017, Ricketts posted to both DNAinfo and the "-ist" network sites that both websites would immediately cease operations, a week after Gothamist writers voted to unionize with the Writers Guild of America, East.[5] All content from all DNAinfo sites and all subsidiary sites were taken down.[6] The next day, archives of the sites were returned to functionality.[7] Ricketts's shutdown was criticized as being an act of retaliation after the two companies' workers had joined a union.[8] References1. ^{{cite news|url=https://www.nytimes.com/2017/11/02/nyregion/dnainfo-gothamist-shutting-down.html|title=DNAinfo and Gothamist Are Shut Down After Vote to Unionize|first1=Andy|last1=Newman|first2=John|last2=Leland|date=2 November 2017|accessdate=2 November 2017|newspaper=The New York Times}} [9][10]2. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.dnainfo.com/|title=Digital Network Associates (DNA)|date=23 February 2009|website=Web.archive.org|accessdate=2 November 2017|deadurl=yes|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20090223143530/http://www.dnainfo.com/|archivedate=23 February 2009|df=}} 3. ^{{cite web|last1=Lazare|first1=Lewis|title=DNAinfo reaching out with a very traditional approach|url=https://www.bizjournals.com/chicago/news/2013/12/09/dnainfo-tries-to-extend-it-reach-via.html|website=Chicago Business Journal|accessdate=20 September 2017|date=9 December 2013}} 4. ^{{Cite news|url=http://www.adweek.com/digital/dnainfo-is-buying-gothamist/|title=DNAinfo Is Buying Gothamist|website=Adweek.com|access-date=2017-06-06|language=en-US}} 5. ^{{cite news|url=http://www.robertfeder.com/2017/11/02/ricketts-shuts-dnainfo/|title=Ricketts shuts down DNAinfo|last=Feder|first=Robert|date=2 November 2017|accessdate=2 November 2017}} 6. ^{{Cite news|url=https://www.nytimes.com/2017/11/02/nyregion/dnainfo-gothamist-shutting-down.html|title=DNAinfo and Gothamist Are Shutting Down|last=Newman|first=Andy|date=November 2, 2017|work=The New York Times|access-date=November 2, 2017|last2=Leland|first2=John|language=en-US|issn=0362-4331}} 7. ^{{Cite news|url=https://qz.com/1119220/the-archives-of-dnainfo-gothamist-chicagoist-laist-and-shanghaiist-are-not-deleted/|title=DNAInfo’s and Gothamist’s archives still exist and are likely to be resurrected|last=Yanofsky|first=David|date=2017-11-03|work=Quartz|access-date=2017-11-04|language=en-US}} 8. ^{{Cite news|url=https://www.nytimes.com/2017/11/03/opinion/dnainfo-gothamist-ricketts-union.html|title=Opinion {{!}} A Billionaire Destroyed His Newsrooms Out of Spite|last=Nolan|first=Hamilton|date=2017-11-03|work=The New York Times|access-date=2017-11-04|language=en-US|issn=0362-4331}} 9. ^1 "New York Hyperlocal Startup DNAinfo Launches in Chicago," by Joe Pompeo, Politico Media beta, November 26, 2012 10. ^1 "DNAinfo," registered trademark, Registration No. 4570965, USPTO, July 22, 2014 }}{{news-website-stub}} 8 : 2009 establishments in New York City|2017 disestablishments in New York (state)|Alternative media|American news websites|Internet properties established in 2009|Internet properties disestablished in 2017|News blogs|Ricketts family |
