Casting{{See also|List of Doctor Who cast members}}Main cast
Tom Baker continued as the Fourth Doctor. Lalla Ward, who played Princess Astra in the season 16 finale The Armageddon Factor, returned to the series as the newly regenerated Romana, replacing Mary Tamm in the role. After John Leeson declined to voice K9 in this season, David Brierley replaced him in the final three serials (and Shada). Guest starsDavros returns in Destiny of the Daleks, this time played by David Gooderson. Serials{{See also|List of Doctor Who episodes (1963–1989)}}Season 17 was intended to follow the same format as had every season since Season 13, with five 4-part serials and a 6-parter closing the season out. However, the planned final serial of the season, Shada, was affected by an industrial dispute involving the BBC's technicians; while the location filming and the first studio recording session were completed, strike action by staff meant that the planned second studio session had to be cancelled. Although the dispute was resolved and plans were put in place to continue work on the story, it was eventually shelved, as the BBC was concerned that its Christmas productions might be affected. A BBC historian has suggested that by cancelling completely instead of finishing what little was required the management could demonstrate that the strikes had consequences[1] |aux4T = {{abbr|AI|Appreciation Index|style=color:white}} |aux4R = [2] |viewersR = [2] |episodes ={{#invoke:Episode list|sublist |Doctor Who (season 17) | Serial = yes | NumParts = 4 | EpisodeNumber = 104 | EpisodeNumber2 = 1 | RTitle = Destiny of the Daleks | Aux1_1 = "Episode One" | Aux1_2 = "Episode Two" | Aux1_3 = "Episode Three" | Aux1_4 = "Episode Four" | DirectedBy = Ken Grieve | WrittenBy = Terry Nation | OriginalAirDate_1 = {{Start date|1979|9|1|df=y}} | OriginalAirDate_2 = {{Start date|1979|9|8|df=y}} | OriginalAirDate_3 = {{Start date|1979|9|15|df=y}} | OriginalAirDate_4 = {{Start date|1979|9|22|df=y}} | ProdCode = 5J | Viewers_1 = 13.0 | Viewers_2 = 12.7 | Viewers_3 = 13.8 | Viewers_4 = 14.4 | Aux4_1 = 67 | Aux4_2 = — | Aux4_3 = 63 | Aux4_4 = 64 | ShortSummary = The TARDIS lands the Fourth Doctor and Romana on a strangely familiar planet.
