He represented the electoral district of Dartmouth South in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1998 to 1999. He was a member of the Nova Scotia New Democratic Party. Chard was member of the former Dartmouth district school board, and a planner with Parks Canada who first ran for provincial politics in the 1993 election.[1] He was defeated,[2] but ran again in the 1998 election, winning the Dartmouth South seat for the NDP.[3][4] In May 1998, he was elected Deputy Speaker of the House of Assembly.[5] He was defeated by Progressive Conservative Tim Olive when he ran for re-election in the 1999 election.[6][7] Chard made another attempt at the NDP nomination in 2003, but lost a coin toss to Marilyn More after the vote count ended in a tie.[8] References1. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.herald.ns.ca/cgi-bin/home/displaypackstory?1998/02/20+277.raw+PE98Feb20+2|title=Chard NDP's pick in Dartmouth South|work=The Chronicle Herald|date=February 20, 1998|accessdate=2014-10-04|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20050123221403/http://www.herald.ns.ca/cgi-bin/home/displaypackstory?1998%2F02%2F20+277.raw+PE98Feb20+2|archivedate=January 23, 2005|deadurl=yes|df=}} {{DEFAULTSORT:Chard, Don}}{{NovaScotia-MLA-stub}}2. ^{{cite web|url=http://electionsnovascotia.ca/sites/default/files/General%20Election%201993.pdf |title=Returns of General Election for the House of Assembly 1993 |publisher=Elections Nova Scotia |year=1993 |accessdate=2014-10-04 |deadurl=yes |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20141006070337/http://electionsnovascotia.ca/sites/default/files/General%20Election%201993.pdf |archivedate=2014-10-06 |df= }} 3. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.herald.ns.ca/cgi-bin/home/displaypackstory?1998/03/25+248.raw+PE98Mar25+2|title=NDP takes metro|work=The Chronicle Herald|date=March 25, 1998|accessdate=2014-10-04|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20050124004424/http://www.herald.ns.ca/cgi-bin/home/displaypackstory?1998%2F03%2F25+248.raw+PE98Mar25+2|archivedate=January 24, 2005|deadurl=yes|df=}} 4. ^{{cite web|url=http://electionsnovascotia.ca/sites/default/files/Dist22.pdf|title=Returns of General Election for the House of Assembly 1998 (Dartmouth South)|publisher=Elections Nova Scotia|year=1998|accessdate=2014-10-04}} 5. ^{{cite news|title=Failure in election of Speaker leaves N.S. government shaky NDP Leader says vote of no confidence may be coming soon|work=The Globe and Mail|date=May 22, 1998}} 6. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.herald.ns.ca/cgi-bin/home/displaypackstory?1999/07/30+210.raw+PE99Jul30+2|title=Defeated MLAs lining up new jobs|work=The Chronicle Herald|date=July 30, 1999|accessdate=2014-10-04|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20050124083038/http://www.herald.ns.ca/cgi-bin/home/displaypackstory?1999%2F07%2F30+210.raw+PE99Jul30+2|archivedate=January 24, 2005|deadurl=yes|df=}} 7. ^{{cite web|url=http://electionsnovascotia.ca/sites/default/files/99DARTS.pdf|title=Returns of General Election for the House of Assembly 1999 (Dartmouth South)|publisher=Elections Nova Scotia|year=1999|accessdate=2014-10-04}} 8. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.herald.ns.ca/stories/2003/03/01/fMetro183.raw.html|title=Coin toss decides NDP candidate in Dartmouth riding|work=The Chronicle Herald|date=March 1, 2003|accessdate=2014-10-04|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20030505140244/http://www.herald.ns.ca/stories/2003/03/01/fMetro183.raw.html|archivedate=May 5, 2003}} 5 : Living people|Nova Scotia New Democratic Party MLAs|People from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia|Saint Mary's University (Halifax) faculty|1917 births |
