}} Don Whitten (born 16 September 1935) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Footscray in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Whitten, who played for Footscray in the under-19s, joined his brother Ted in the senior team in 1956.[1] He played 24 games over three seasons with Footscray, often as a centreman, then in 1959 joined Western District Football League club Casterton as coach.[2][3] He coached Casterton to a premiership in 1960, but was then replaced in the role by two-time Essendon best and fairest winner, Reg Burgess.[3][4] Instead, Whitten played for Yarraville in 1961 and was a member of their premiership side that year.[1][5] He captained the club in 1963, a year in which he finished second in the J. J. Liston Trophy, to teammate Ron Clegg.[6] From 1964 to 1968, Whitten was coach of Tocumwal in the Murray Football League.[7][8] During his tenure, Tocumwal made three consecutive grand finals and won the premiership in 1967.[9] References1. ^1 {{cite book|last=Holmesby|first=Russell|last2=Main|first2=Jim|title=The Encyclopedia Of AFL Footballers| publisher=BAS Publishing|year=2007|isbn=9781920910785}} {{DEFAULTSORT:Whitten, Don}}2. ^{{cite web|url=http://afltables.com/afl/stats/players/D/Don_Whitten.html| title=Don Whitten| publisher=AFL Tables}} 3. ^1 Casterton News, "Whitten Returns" {{webarchive |url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140314030357/http://www.spec.com.au/blog/2013/07/30/whitten-returns/ |date=14 March 2014 }}, 30 July 2013, Ian Lewis 4. ^The Age, "A lift for the Cats", 10 June 2012, Adam McNicol 5. ^The Age, [https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1300&dat=19610410&id=9aQUAAAAIBAJ&sjid=s7EDAAAAIBAJ&pg=4622,1339879 "Don Whitten"], 10 April 1961, p. 9 6. ^The Age, [https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1300&dat=19630830&id=1X1VAAAAIBAJ&sjid=rJYDAAAAIBAJ&pg=6509,4466704 "Yarraville Players Dominate Liston Voting – Clegg Wins"], 30 August 1963, p. 1 7. ^The Age, [https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1300&dat=19660902&id=fx0QAAAAIBAJ&sjid=apMDAAAAIBAJ&pg=4447,307320 "Whitten's fitness key to result"], 2 September 1966, p. 12 8. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.foxsportspulse.com/club_info.cgi?c=1-6183-80781-252247-0&sID=91443| title=TFC Honour Roll| publisher=Fox Sports Pulse}} 9. ^{{cite web|url=http://resources.news.com.au/files/588/491/tocumwal-1568124-1237438446533.pdf| title=Tocumwal| publisher=News Limited}} (PDF) 7 : 1935 births|Australian rules footballers from Victoria (Australia)|Western Bulldogs players|Yarraville Football Club players|Casterton Football Club players|Braybrook Football Club players|Living people |
