Dopo was founded in 2003[2] and Adesso was spun off in February 2009 when the owners acquired additional nearby space.[3][4] Both restaurants focus on charcuterie, with menus changing on a daily basis to take advantage of timely ingredients.[2][5] They have been described by the New York Times as part of a new wave of innovative restaurants that have begun to improve Oakland's reputation for food,[6] and have won extensive local acclaim, with both Dopo and Adesso being listed by the San Francisco Chronicle as one of the top hundred restaurants in the Bay Area in 2012.[7] DopoDopo was the first of Smulewitz's restaurants, founded in September 2003. It serves Northern Italian inspired cuisine,[5] focusing primarily on charcuterie, pizza, and seafood and emphasizing dishes that are less well known.[11][8] Its style has been influenced by the California cuisine of the nearby Chez Panisse, as well as the charcuterie of Oliveto, a nearby restaurant that was one of the first in the country to have an in-house charcuterie program.[2][5] The restaurant makes an active effort to use local and sustainable food where possible, with ingredients being purchased fresh from Monterey Market every day, or delivered by local farms.[9] Dopo has been rated among the top hundred restaurants in the Bay Area by the San Francisco Chronicle from 2007 to 2011.[10] AdessoAdesso was split off from Dopo in early 2009.[3] Adesso's menu focuses on salumi and Pâté,[3] with a substantially larger array of charcuterie available than at Dopo.[2] Adesso also has an extensive bar, with well-reviewed cocktails and a large number of Italian wines.[11] Adesso has been rated among the top hundred restaurants in the Bay Area by the San Francisco Chronicle in 2010 and 2011 - the only two ranking years Adesso has yet been open for.[12] Adesso received a Good Food Award in 2012 for their speck.[1][13] References1. ^1 {{cite web|url=http://dopoadesso.com|title=Dopo Adesso|accessdate=9 June 2012}} 2. ^1 2 3 4 {{cite news|last=Hu|first=Janny|title=Jon Smulewitz finesses salumi at Dopo, Adesso|url=http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2010/10/13/DDJR1FR61A.DTL|accessdate=9 June 2012|newspaper=SF Chronicle|date=14 October 14}} 3. ^1 2 {{cite news|last=Wandell|first=Deb|title=Opening: Adesso in Oakland|url=http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2009/03/13/FD4I16E9CT.DTL|accessdate=9 June 2012|newspaper=SF Chronicle|date=15 March 2009}} 4. ^{{cite news|last=Lauriston|first=Robert|title=Dopo Spins Off Adesso|url=http://blogs.sfweekly.com/foodie/2009/01/dopo_spins_off_scopa.php|accessdate=9 June 2012|newspaper=SF Weekly|date=21 January 2009}} 5. ^1 2 {{cite news|last=Keilholtz|first=Erik|title=Fresh ingredients, attention to detail set Dopo apart|url=http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1P2-6978800.html|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160203135645/https://www.highbeam.com/doc/1P2-6978800.html|dead-url=yes|archive-date=3 February 2016|accessdate=9 June 2012|publisher=via HighBeam Research|newspaper=Oakland Tribune|date=4 January 2004}}{{subscription required}} 6. ^{{cite news|last=Farley|first=David|title=In Oakland, Innovation Is on the Menu|url=http://travel.nytimes.com//2010/06/27/travel/27choice.html|accessdate=9 June 2012|newspaper=New York Times|date=23 June 2010}} 7. ^{{cite news|last=Bauer|first=Michael|title=Top 100 Bay Area Restaurants|url=http://www.sfgate.com/food/top100/|accessdate=9 June 2012|newspaper=San Francisco Chronicle|date=April 2012}} 8. ^{{cite news|last=Bauer|first=Michael|title=Top 100 Bay Area Restaurants - Dopo|url=http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/listings/restaurants/venue?vid=206611|accessdate=9 June 2012|newspaper=SF Chronicle}} 9. ^1 {{cite news|title=Dining out: Dead on Delicious dopo|url=http://www.oaklandmagazine.com/Oakland-Magazine/April-2007/Dining-Out/|accessdate=9 June 2012|newspaper=Oakland Magazine|date=April 2007}} 10. ^{{cite news|title=Dopo - Top 100 Restaurants |url=http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/listings/restaurants/venuetop2012?vid=206611 |accessdate=9 June 2012 |newspaper=San Francisco Chronicle }}{{dead link|date=June 2016|bot=medic}}{{cbignore|bot=medic}} 11. ^{{cite news|last=Lauriston|first=Robert|title=Adesso: The Happiest Hour on Earth|url=http://blogs.sfweekly.com/foodie/2009/04/adesso_the_happiest_hour_on_ea.ph|accessdate=9 June 2012|newspaper=SF Weekly|date=17 April 2009}} 12. ^{{cite news|title=Adesso - Top 100 Restaurants|url=http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/listings/restaurants/venuetop2011?vid=602706|accessdate=9 June 2012|newspaper=San Francisco Chronicle}} 13. ^{{cite news|title=What You Missed at the Good Food Awards, Last Friday in San Francisco|url=http://sanfrancisco.grubstreet.com/2012/01/what_you_missed_at_the_good_fo_1.html|accessdate=9 June 2012|newspaper=SF Grubstreet|date=16 January 2012}} Locations
