The Barts Heart Centre ^[1], located at St Bartholomew's Hospital ^[2] is run by the Barts Health NHS Trust ^[3]. It is a new cardiovascular centre for patient care and research, will treat approximately 80,000 patients a year, and will be the UK's largest heart centre ^[4] .

The Barts Heart Centre opened to outpatients in September 2014 and the transition of services from the London Chest Hospital and Heart Hospital in April and May 2015 ^[5] means it is now treating patients through procedures such as heart bypass and aortic valve surgery, and is one of London's Heart Attack Centres.

History

The Barts Heart Centre was formed following the successful transition of services from the Barts Health NHS Trust's London Chest Hospital ^[6] and UCLH's The Heart Hospital ^[7] in April and May 2015, together with existing cardiac services at St Bartholomew's Hospital. In 2014, NHS England (London) ^[8]approved proposals ^[9] for major changes to the organisation of services for specialist cardiovascular care across London, leading to the recommendation to establish the new Barts Heart Centre at St Bartholomew's Hospital.

Partners

The Centre is part of UCL Partners^[10], the UK's largest academic health science network, facilitating research, development and collaboration across a wode group of healthcare providers and academic institutions to create a world leading platform for innovation, and is aligned to anew joint cardiovascular institute run by Queen Mary University London ^[11] and UCL ^[12]

Facilities

The state of the art facilities include 10 theatres, 10 catheter labs, 250 general cardiac beds and 58 critical care beds, and 40 CCU beds, and staff will perform more heat energy and cardiac procedures than any other centre in Europe. Clinicians estimate that an additional 1,000 lives could be saved every year^[13]

The Barts Heart Centre is no established from two co-located buildings at St Bartholomew's Hospital - in the existing Queen Elizabeth 11 building ans in the King George V building. With the further development of the new hospital at St Bartholomew's, by October 2016 the Heart Centre will be entirely accommodated in the King George V Building.
