British Chinese Workforce Heritage project is a project funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund[1] and run by Ming-Ai (London) Institute[2] . Its stated aims are to look at the "contribution of the British Chinese workforce in London over the last 150 years."[3] The project is in the process of conducting three year of oral history interviews and writing research articles, all focused on the history of the British Chinese, including their immigration and settlement in the United Kingdom. Much of the content is produced in English and Traditional Chinese.

Oral History Interviews

The project has conducted a number of oral history interviews with those working in seafaring, hairdressing, catering, and the military.[4] The full-length interviews are hosted on youtube and are transcribed to provide an academic resource.

The early history of the Chinese in the United Kingdom is not well documented within oral history. Particularly the histories of the Chinese seamen who were the first to arrive in the United Kingdom. Yew Chang, a former seaman was interviewed as part of the project and the translation of some of his interview into English does provide a resource for understanding the conditions that these seaman had to live with.[5]
