The Broadband Technology Opportunity Program (BTOP) program is a $4,700,000,00 grant program established by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The program is part of the National Telecommunications and Information Administration at the U.S. Department of Commerce. $4,700,000,000 in total funds not less than $4,350,000,000, must be spent on grants, which must be spend the following way: $10,000,000 shall be transferred to ‘Department of Commerce, Office of Inspector General’ for the purposes of audits and oversight of funds not less than $200,000,000 shall be available for competitive grants for expanding public computer center capacity not less than $250,000,000 shall be available for competitive grants for innovative programs to encourage sustainable adoption of broadband service up to $350,000,000 pursuant to the Broadband Data Improvement Act an amount to be decided to be transferred to the FCC for the National Broadband Plan. According to NTIA's website (as of July 30th, 2011), $4,226,426,267 worth of grants were allocated in the following way: $3,483,624,525 for Broadband Infrastructure Project $199,244,164 for Public Computer Center Project $250,737,560 for Sustainable Broadband Adoption $292,820,018 for State Broadband Data and Development Grant Program ReferencesExternal links
