Bōtaoshi (棒倒し) is an athletic team sport of relatively new invention originating in Japan. Characterized by intense short matches between large teams, this competitive win-or-lose game involves an attempt by the offense overwhelm the defense in a limited number of allowed ways, and a tall pole on which the defense places one of its team members.

Videos of amateur and organized matches are widely available on video sharing websites such as YouTube.com, notably of games between battalions of the National Defense Academy of Japan, performed at its annual festival and called "pole capturing competition".

Name

The components of the name Bōtaoshi are:

  • Bō () - meaning stick, rod or pole.
  • Taoshi () - meaning to overthrow, collapse, or drop.

Given the context of the sport, possible translations range from "bar down", "beat bar" to "tilt rod". "Bring down the pole" is another fitting translation that bears similarities to the self-descriptive names of other multiplayer contests known in the West such as king of the hill, capture the flag; games which have much in common with Bōtaoshi.

Goal

= Offense

The goal of the game is simple. For the offense to win they may either:

  • Bring down the defense's pole below a certain angle, relative to the ground.
  • Remove the defense's personnel who is stationed at the top of the pole for a specified amount of time.

Defense

Regardless of the style of play or the strategies of the challenging team, the defense must outlast and repel all attacks and prevent the offense from achieving its goals in an specified time frame (for example, two minutes.)

Safety

Fouls

These goals naturally lead to the large teams converging on a single point(the pole) in a chaotic mass of players. In order for both sides to achieve victory it is common for players to struggle with each other and to climb over other players. There are, however, limits to the level of allowable violence, and referees can remove players who perform foul acts.

Safety measures

For safety, there are grooming and dress-code requirements. For example, since players are often standing on one another & using their feet as weapons games are played barefoot.

Defending players typically are equipped with padded headgear given the amount of physical abuse to which they are subjected.

The game is typically played on a field or beach due to the amount of space needed for play and the likelihood of players falling some distance to the ground.

Variations

  • Removing a short flagpole from the top of the pole. This variation is considerably safer in the regard that not having a player balanced on pole makes removes an obvious risk of injuries from falling.
  • Removing the rod from the ground as an offensive goal.
  • Placing an offender's player at the top of the pole as an offensive goal.
  • A double-match where two sets of defending teams defend two poles against two challenging teams.
