Dorri Olds (born 1961, New York City) is a writer and journalist.

Life as Recounted in Autobiographical Essays, TV Interviews, and magazine and newspaper profiles

Olds’ published creative non-fiction autobiographical essays include descriptions of her experiences growing up in Manhattan and Long Island. In an essay she wrote for The New York Times she described herself as “a lonely upper-middle-class Jewish nerd.”[1]

Olds was the victim of a gang rape at 13 years old, which she says launched years of struggles with drug and alcohol dependence.[2][3][4][5][6]

In addition to life experiences she has related in her essays, her experiences have also been covered in media outlets such as the Globe and Mail. She was also interviewed on the nationally televised (U.S.) program Dr. Drew On Call about her years in recovery from the trauma of the rape.[7][8][9][10][11]

Olds was interviewed on national TV by CBS News after the suicide of fashion designer Kate Spade. Olds discussed her own suicide attempts and the mindset of one who considers suicide.[12]

In 2013 Olds was profiled in the magazine Entrepreneur concerning communication strategies on social media.[13]

A 2012 profile of New Yorkers in the New York Post states that Olds lives in Chelsea, Manhattan.[14]

Olds has interviewed and/or photographed numerous A-list celebrities, including James Franco, Holly Hunter, Daniel Radcliffe, Steven Spielberg and many others. Her opinions and advice concerning online communication have been published in Entrepreneur.com, and her work has appeared in publications such as The New York Times, New York Press, Examiner.com, People, Marie Claire and The Forward. She has been profiled or quoted in publications such as the Globe and Mail, the New York Post, Entrepreneur.com and The New York Times.[15][16][17][18][19][20][21][22][23][24]

Olds has interviewed numerous A-list celebrities, such as Albert Brooks, James Franco, Holly Hunter, Julianne Moore, Eric Roberts, Daniel Radcliffe and Steven Spielberg. Her published journalism also includes such things as film reviews and an interview with Susan Bordo, author of The Destruction of Hillary Clinton and the Pulitzer Prize entry Unbearable Weight.[25][26][27][28]

Other writing

Numerous anthologies have published Olds' writing, including several editions of the Chicken Soup for the Soul series of books. She is currently at work on a memoir, Running Amok: The Girl with 9 Lives.[29][30][31][32][33][34][35][36]

Literary Award

Olds was the first-place winner of the New York Press Writing Contest in the non-fiction category in 2009 for her autobiographical story about her many suicide attempts and a car accident that nearly killed her, "9 Lives for a Weeble."[4][37]

Film

The 2017 documentary Love, Lust, Faith & Sex (+Hope!) in New York City features Olds and other New Yorkers' thoughts on the city and their life experiences.[38]

Education

Olds received a BFA in 1985 from Parson's School of Design, where she made the Dean's List, majoring in Illustration.[39]

Organizations

Olds is a member of the American Society of Journalists and Authors.[40][41]
