Florida Theological Seminary (FTS) is a non-denominational Evangelical seminary granting Associates, Bachelors, Masters and Doctorate degrees, with its main campus located in Orlando, Florida, United States. The seminary was founded in 1985 and has branch campuses in various locations both in the United States and abroad. Florida Christian University (FCU) was later born out of FTS.

Early History

Florida Theological Seminary (FTS) was founded in 1985 by the late Rev. Dr. Harold Shindoll, Ph.D. The seminary inhabited a few different locations in its early days, before settling at its current location on Lakehurst Drive, in south Orlando near Universal Studios. FTS offered several programs in the area of Theology and Bible.

In 1993, the Rev. Dr. Bruce W.H. Urich originally came to FTS as a professor. Dr. Urich had a variety of teaching experiences to his credit, which he brought with him to FTS. In 1995, he was requested by Dr. Shindoll to become Dean of the Seminary, and remains so until this day. He also assumed the role of Dean of the University in 1999 under the leadership of Dr. Portigliatti.

In 1998, Dr. A. Floralee Shindoll, Ph.D. was chosen president of FTS, following in her husband’s footsteps, and continuing the tradition of FTS. That same year, Dr. Anthony Portigliatti, Ph.D. came to FTS, bringing his vast experience from Argentina and Brazil. In 1999, Dr. Portigliatti was unanimously chosen as president and chancellor of FTS. He bestowed the title of President Emeritus upon Dr. Shindoll, who is still today a pillar of FTS and FCU.

It was under the tutelage of Dr. Portigliatti that FCU was born. The vision of FTS was broadened and it became a university offering new programs and expanding its reach to 50 countries around the globe.

Today

Today FTS has blossomed into and operates within the scope of FCU. The original vision of FTC has been retained in their theologically related programs. Courses are offered in three languages: English, Portuguese and Spanish. FTS/FCU has three modes of study. Students may take courses at their campus, live over the internet, or courses on DVD media.

Programs and Courses

Currently FTS offers several programs including:

Biblical Studies

Theology

Pastoral Leadership

On the following levels:

Associates

Bachelors

Masters

Doctorate

FTS offers Theology and Bible courses one would expect from a seminary. Also, they offer several creative courses in the field of theology such as a “Tabernacle” course, with practical applications, as well as an Internet Ministry course.

Modes of Study

Reaching a wider student audience, FTS offers three different forms of study for its students. Firstly, classroom courses are taught at their Orlando campus. Secondly, those same courses are transmitted live over the web through FTS’ academic website www.fcutv.com . Courses are also filmed and offered as the third modality in the form of DVD.

Certifications

Florida Theological Seminary holds the coveted Gold Certification with both the CPCA (Council of Private Colleges of America) and the FCPC (Florida Council of Private Colleges). The latter represents its faith based, post-secondary private member institutions before government and other private agencies. FTS is not an accredited Seminary, but as such is allowed more flexibility in its educational practices. Its programs are geared towards adult learners, and for whom a traditional seminary structure is not preferred.

Seminar

Each year, FCU/FTS hosts several seminars that are specific to their academic programs. For their theology and counseling students they offer the combined Interministry-Intercounseling Seminar. For their Life Coaching students they offer the Intercoaching Seminar, and also under the Interbusiness umbrella is a seminar of the same name for their business students.

This annual seminar held every year in December also offers courses for the students to meet their academic requirements. Respected speakers come from around the world to speak at the various seminars. The seminars bring together many members of the student body and faculty from around the country and world. This is also when their international community carries out important business such as the defense of Master’s theses and Doctoral dissertations.

FTS in the 21st Century

FTS has been mindful of technological changes, advancements and tendencies in the global marketplace and has taken advantage of these developments to position themselves strategically.
