Gambit is an upcoming American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name, distributed by 20th Century Fox. It is intended to be an installment of the X-Men film series. The film has been written by Josh Zetumer, based on a story by the character's creator Chris Claremont, with Channing Tatum set to star in the title role.

Tatum was looked at for early attempts to include Gambit in the X-Men films but was not available for that character's film introduction in Wolverine. Taylor Kitsch portrayed the character instead, and was not well received. Producer Lauren Shuler Donner expressed interest in a Gambit film starring Tatum in early 2014, and the actor officially signed on that May. Rupert Wyatt, Doug Liman, and Gore Verbinski have been attached as director to the film at different times during development.

Gambit is set to be released on March 13, 2020.

Production

Development

{{main|Development of Gambit}}Channing Tatum was set to portray Gambit in the 2006 film The Last Stand before the character was written out of the script. He was unable to re-commit to the part for the spin-off film Wolverine (2009), and Taylor Kitsch was cast in the role instead.[4] Wolverine was not well received by critics, and Kitsch's performance did not make him the breakout hit that 20th Century Fox executives had expected. In September 2013, Tatum expressed interest in taking over the role from Kitsch,[5] and X-Men franchise producer Lauren Shuler Donner revealed in January 2014 that she had begun planning a Gambit film with Tatum.[6] He officially signed on to star and produce that May.[7][1]

Josh Zetumer was hired to write the script in October, working off a story treatment by Gambit's comic creator Chris Claremont.[1] Bennett Miller, Darren Aronofsky, Gareth Evans, and J.C. Chandor all declined to direct the film,[10][11] before Rupert Wyatt signed on to direct in June 2015.[12] Wyatt withdrew from the project that September due to a scheduling conflict and differences of opinion on the script with Fox, Tatum, and Kinberg.[13] Doug Liman signed on to replace him in November,[14] but chose to delay production and direct the film The Wall (2017) first, while waiting for a new draft of the Gambit script.[15] He ultimately chose to leave the project because he "just wasn't feeling [the script]. I've gotta connect to the script."[16] The film went into development again, with Tatum expressing gratitude that they were able to take their time to get the project right, and especially learn from the success of Fox's Deadpool (2016) and Logan.[17] In October, Gore Verbinski signed on to direct the film, and pre-production was "well underway" by the end of the month. However, Verbinski withdrew from the project in January 2018 due to a scheduling conflict and reported creative differences.[18][19] In January 2019, it was reported that Tatum might be interested in directing the film along with starring.[20]

Filming

Gambit is set to be produced under the working title Forevermore, changed from the title Chess that was used throughout the long development process.[21]

Release

Gambit is scheduled for release on March 13, 2020 by 20th Century Fox.[22] It was previously set to release the film on October 7, 2016,[23] but had removed it from that date in February 2016.[24] Then the film was given a February 14, 2019 release after Verbinski signed on as director,[25] before pushing the date back again, to June 7, when he left the project.[26] That September, Fox pushed the film back to its 2020 release date.[22]

Marketing

Tatum attended Fox's X-Men panel at the 2015 San Diego Comic-Con to promote Gambit alongside cast members from X-Men: Apocalypse, Deadpool, Logan, and Fantastic Four, as well as comic writer Stan Lee.[28]

Future

Fox intends for Gambit to be the first in a new film franchise featuring the character.[7]
