Work

The School of Social Entrepreneurs

Michelle attended the School of Social Entrepreneurs in 2004 and was mentored by Anthony Marshall (financial expertise).

Later career/Cultural Leader

In 2002 with a small amount of seed capital Michelle was able to instigate a step change in the running and organisation of CoolTan Arts, at that point an almost dormant charity, firstly being granted Unltd Millennium Foundation funding which was invested in a computer with the capacity to produce and edit video as well as being accepted at the School of Social Entrepreneurs which provided access to an invaluable network of professionals as well as a cash injection. This burst of activity and the innovative, enterprising and extraordinary output which then followed became a fruitful period for Michelle where she was able to work both as a producer of fine art works as well as a facilitator and mentor for service users via CoolTan through a programme of workshops, events and out reach (her empathy and understanding of mental health issues as well as her ability to be a champion for those affected by the many ramifications of stigmatisation, largely due in part because of to her own lived experience as both a non-Archetypal woman and artist) in the borough and further afield. The provision was exemplary and was swiftly recognised by both the disability, arts and mental health community. The charity quickly grew and moved from its temporary base at Loughborough Junction under a railway arch to 237 Walworth Road and then finally to 155 Walworth Road.

Michelle has spent the last fourteen years collaboratively developing The Largactyl Shuffle. The project is named after Chlorpromazine, one of the first anti-psychotic drugs, whose side effects included a deterioration of motor functions that often manifest in a slow shuffling walk. She has co-designed psychogeographical reliefs, with CoolTan Arts participants, and encouraged them to plan, design and develop walks using the concept of psychogeographical maps. The Largactyl Shuffle has been commissioned by the Southbank Centre, the Science Museum and most recently by Southwark Council’s Public Health department, bringing art to new audiences and new places without prejudice.

Most recently Michelle was featured in the Disabled Artists VISION '2017 World Para Athletics Championships' on London's Shoreditch Art Wall. The artwork can also be viewed at www.murals4mankind.org.

Fruit Cake is the name of Michelle's Community Interest Company.

Controversy

Having taken CoolTan Arts in South London from a grass roots squatter lead movement in a suntan factory in Brixton to a charity with its head quarters on the Walworth Road turning over half a million pounds, Michelle became embroiled in a dispute with a number of other members of the charity. The dispute went public on social media and the name-calling was vitriolic. Michelle was suspended by the board of Trustees amidst defamatory accusations. After three or so years the matter was resolved at an Employment Tribunal where Michelle represented herself. The majority of Michelle's complaints were not accepted at Tribunal however it was decided that she had been discriminated against because of her gender. As of the present moment (spring 2019) Michelle has received no compensation for the considerable distress she suffered and the organisation went into liquidation in the summer in 2018.

Relationships
