Midnight (vocalist) a.k.a. John Patrick McDonald, born on 29 April 1962, was the original vocalist for Crimson Glory and also recorded solo material. He died on 8 July 2009.

Crimson Glory

Midnight recorded three albums with Crimson Glory. The self titled Crimson Glory album was released in 1986, and contained his composition Lost Reflection. This was to become Midnight's signature song, and remains a good example of both his lyrical themes and his emotional singing style. In 1988, the band released Transcendence, which many consider the finest example of their work. Strange and Beautiful marked a change in personell, with Dana Burnell and Ben Jackson being replaced by Ravi Jakhotia and in musical style. Midnight left the band shortly after the release of Strange and Beautiful in 1991.

Midnight appeared at a single reunion concert on 12 July 2006 at Rockwave Festival in Athens Greece. Although there were rumors of involvement in the recording of a new studio album, this never materialized.

Solo Work

As a solo artist, Midnight experimented with a wide range of musical styles and incorporated instruments that are not normally associated with rock music, such as the hammered dulcimer. His first solo release was an acoustic demo, alternately titled M or Song from the Attic, which was released in 2001. Initially, only 500 copies of this were sold through his website Midnight's Attic. In 2005, Sakada came out through Black Lotus records. In 2006, Midnight began work on M2 - Descending into Madness, an ambitious recording project, that expanded to several proposed releases, said to include new original material, a covers album and exclusive Acoustic Crimson recordings. Descending into Madness was not released before his death in 2009.

A private limited issue release called All Souls Midnight was sent to those who had pre-ordered M2 in 2008, but was never made available commmercially.

Vocal Style

While with Crimson Glory, Midnight came to be associated with a vocal range stretching beyond three octaves and a delivery of unusual emotional depth. He credits the Florida vocal coach Al Koehn with playing a role in the development of his vocal resources. He achieved the haunting emotional dimensions of his work by tapping into soul-felt emotions and and reliving the experiences and nightmares that inspired such works.

Themes

Many of Midnight's lyrics explore the inner worlds of the subconscious, of the afterlife and of dreams, but also of struggles with human failings and fine dividing line between good and evil. His sense of humor can be disturbingly dark, touching on a fascination with horror and the macabre. In interviews, he named his inspiration to come from dreams, from ghosts and from the supernatural, and that it often manifests first in visual form.
