Priscilla Lane was born Priscilla Mullican on June 12, 1915 in Indianola, Iowa. She was the youngest of five girls, four of whom would be actresses. Her older sisters were, Martha, Leota, Lola, and Rosemary. (See Lane Sisters) Their parents were Lorezno A.Mullican and Martha Hicks.

Early Career

Priscilla, with her sister Rosemary studied dance and singing. On September 30, 1930, they performed on stage. The sisters were accompying Lola's film "Good News."

In 1931, after graduating high school, Priscilla attended Eagin School of Dramatic Arts in New York. Her sister Leota already had a film career by this time. In 1932, Priscilla was joined by her mother and her sister Rosemary. The two sisters auditioned together as a duo for many Broadway shows. In 1933, the sisters were heard by Fred Waring's glee band. Fred signed them with him and the sisters began traveling with his group Fred Waring and the Pennsylvanians Dance Band. Fred also had a radio program in which Priscilla established herself as a comedienne. This would last five years.

In 1937, Waring's group landed a spot in the musical "Varsity Girls". Both Priscilla and her sister received top roles. She would play the nice girl, set against Rosemary's role as a temperamental star. Priscilla and Rosemary were well liked. Warner Brother's bought out their contacts from Fred.

Under Warner Brothers

Priscilla made 16 films in all at Warner Brothers. One of which was "Four Daughters", which teamed her with her sister Rosemary again and their sister Lola. Lola wanted to included Leota for a role, but instead it went to Gale Page. Priscilla was considered for the role of Melanie Wilkes in Gone with the Wind. While she was testing for Melanie, Warner Brothers cast her in "The Roaring Twenties" alongside James Cagney. Jack Warner suspended Priscilla many times for not taking roles she "regarded as poor." She was never heavily promoted at Warner Brothers and her contact ended in 1942.

Other Film Roles

After her contact ended, Priscilla was cast in Hitchcock's "Saboteur". The role she is most known for, "Arsenic and Old Lace" was made in 1944. She would act along side Cary Grant. After only two more films, Priscilla retired.

Personal Life

Priscilla eloped with Oren Haglund (1939-1939). After a day, she left him. In 1942, she married Joseph A. Howard. This marriage lasted until Joseph's death in 1976. With Joseph, she had children:

Hannah (born April 17, 1950)

Judith (born August 22,1953)

James (born December 4,1955)

The family settled in New England in 1951. Priscilla lead a normal lifestyle. Although, she made a short comeback as host of ‘The Priscilla Lane Show' on Boston television. Joe retired July, 1972. They then moved to their summer house in Derry, New Hampshire. On May 18th, 1976, Joe died.

Later Years and Death

After Joe's death, Priscilla busied herself with other hobbies. In 1994, she was diagnosed with lung cancer. Priscilla was moved to a nursing home near her son Joe in Andover, Massachusetts. She died at the home at 7:30 a.m. on April 4, 1995 both from lung cancer and also chronic heart failure.
