Origins & Brief History

The Signalling Record Society was formed in late 1969 although the precise date is now lost in the mists of time, following a magazine advertisement seeking people with an interest in exchanging and preserving signal box diagrams. The five founding members, three railway signalmen and two signal engineering students, met and agreed to formalise matters and share the organisational tasks between themselves.

Despite a letter appearing in a magazine stating that there wasn't much interest in signalling advertisments for the Society were placed and membership started to grow. Newsletters were issued with issue 1 primarily aimed at welcoming new members and 'groups' were formed with the 'group leaders' co-ordinating matters in their areas. The groups began a program of research and extracting information from the Deeds and Records Office at Porchester Road, London. Groups, as such, did not work too well due to the widely scattered work locations and residences of the members and were soon superceded by a network 'corresponding' members who undertook to be the 'expert' in a particular geographic area or topic.

As the Society became more widely known it participated in a number of exhibitions and this, in turn, increased the visibility of the Society to an even wider audience. Membership continued to grow, attracting people from all walks of life but with a common interest in signalling as well as people employed in the railway industry. This allowed the organisational tasks to be shared out amongst more members. Visits were made to signalling establishments by arrangement with British Rail and this practice continues today courtesy of Network Rail and London Underground as well as a number of Heritage Railways.

The Society has published a number of books on behalf of members together with Research Notes and Signalling Papers. The original Newsletter was superceded by The Signalling Record which is published six times each year. It is only issued to members although copies sometimes appear on the second-hand market.

Today, the Society holds and Annual General Meeting plus regional meetings in Crewe and York and has an active web site.

Archives

The Society maintains an archive of printed matter which is available for members' researches. The contents have variously been donated by British Rail, The Railway Inspectorate and other railway industry companies and form a unique collection of material.

A photographic archive exists and is in the care of Kidderminster Railway Museum.

The Society is building a Digital Archive, parts of which can be obtained free of charge from the Society web site.
